Ok so for now I’m running a 2.8 4 speed do you guys think it’s the tach filter and the gauge cause I’ll order a new filter from the fiero store and get a gauge from a 86 SE from a local yard that I just found

It's not the filter, it's the tach.

Those RPM numbers are for stock tires......smaller diameter tires will make RPMs go up.[This message has been edited by Gall757 (edited 04-22-2020).]

i'm putting in a 3800 SC from a 2002 GTP and i have all three 4 speed trannies. My original intention was to use the MY8 tranny for the swap, but then a friend turned me onto the idea of making a frankentranny using the 3,4 an final drive gear from the My8 and the 1,2 and case from the M17. Pretty sure i could pull it off if i had a press to remove and install the gears. Maybe this winter i will attempt it, when i pull apart the M17 to see how daunting it is. There is a thread on the forum here about how to do this.

I have a hybrid Muncie 4spd in my 3800SC 84 SE. I wanted the 4spd strength but also good on the highway. After driving it for 2 years with the Duke and the 4:10 I knew that gearing was too low and planned my swap and bought an MY8 from someone here on the forum. I also bought an M17 to complete the build as per the thread here on the forum. The end result is great. 2300 RPM @ 70mph and about 28mpg highway and 22-24 local depending on how I drive it. Grew up driving a 4spd and I love it. Well suited to the L67 power curve. It does take more effort that just buying a 5 spd but it also makes it different.

It did require I modify the shift cable braket and one of the levers to keep the cables clear of the crossover pipe. I also wrapped the with a heat insulator. 3 years and 12K later all is great.

larafan: Thanks for the pic and the encouragement to do a hybrid. i'm gonna tear down the M17 to see how hard it looks before undertaking a hybrid. How did you do the spacers?

Bought the Kent Smith tool used on eBay and used it and re-sold it. It's listed in the thread on the build. It really was easy to do following step by step from the thread. Also having a friend to help you keep things straight and 2 separate areas so you can keep the parts organized. In the end everything went together with the shims that were in the M17 originally. Oops, this is exactly the social faux-pas I was trying to avoid.
I sent this by accident.
----- Message Forwarded from pmbrunelle ----- You may want to consider modifying (or building a new one) the crossover pipe and leaving the shift cables alone.
For the shift linkage, I think it would be ideal if the cables came in at a straight angle, like the stock setup does. If they came in crooked, they would be forcing the shift levers in a sideways (undesired) manner.
Larafan's solution probably works... I just don't think it's the ideal solution. I didn't feel like sharing this opinion on the thread, as larafan may have taken it personally. So after 7 years on this forum of gaining and sharing I accidently received the above private message meant for the OP from pmbrunelle. I shared my experience in answer to the OP's request. If someone has a differing opinion or experience why not share that information and or have a discussion about the differing opinion. But someone who doesn't know me or my qualifications does it this way. Now we all know your opinion.

Yup, now the cat's out of the bag!
I've learned in life: if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it... or at least do so behind the person's back.[This message has been edited by pmbrunelle (edited 04-24-2020).]
