Thanks, I checked it out yesterday, lots of good info, BTW I owned an 84 for 34 years, sold it and now have the 86, but I'm kinda new, the 84 sat in my garage for 27 years, so I'm back in the game.

Both my cars would tend to run hot in slow traffic or in the mountains on a long climb. The 86 was worse due to partially dented coolant pipes. I run 195* thermostats in each and installed Rodney's 210 fan switch. Now, they run at the desired temperature and the cooling fan comes on before the temperature gets too high. Even in stop and go traffic. It was a super improvement for the 86. I originally had a stock switch and a 180* thermostat in the 87 and fuel mileage suffered. Add to that no debris anywhere in the system clogging the heater core or the radiator and no air in the system. Been fighting this battle for some time now.
Using the Stant Superstat 195. I tested it along few other thermostats and it definitely opens up the most of them all. I doubt though if this has any real effect on cooling.[This message has been edited by cebix (edited 02-25-2020).]

I like a 195 °F thermostat on a Fiero 2.8.
I tried a 160 °F thermostat, but the engine needed more acceleration enrichment, and despite that, the engine wouldn't rev up as cleanly (less good throttle response).
I didn't notice any driveability change when the temperature rose above 195 °F.
I never experimented with a 180 °F thermostat.
You don't choose a lower-temperature thermostat to reduce peak operating temperatures. The thermostat is selected to establish the minimum coolant temperature when the engine is already warmed up.
