If you do switch starters, double check to make sure the contact spots are bare metal.. no Cosmoline or other stuff.

OK update 12. Don't get this week back.....

I went back to the original 96 starter after seeing it should work and started redoing the shims measuring and inserting and finally got it to engage and disengage with no binding. Obviously I had the wrong shims in place when I first started all this as the final shim was 1/32" thick..... I did also turn the flywheel completely around slowly and file down where there looked like burrs on the flywheel or sharp edges. It works now so first issue is finished.

On to no power at the ignition switch etc. It had the fuel pump priming when I first started working on turning the engine over a week ago bu then just stopped.

1. Checked all fuses and found one 5 amp fuse to the ign 2 injectors blown so replaced that. The 10 amp ign fuse loos good but will replace anyway just to be sure
2. Checked clutch neutral switch
3. when I turn ignition on to on position, I get 12V at the yellow wire. In reading elsewhere on here, that is not supposed to be the case. It is supposed to be zero at ON and then 12V when key is at start position?? I have 12V at ON and zero at start position.
4. Checked power to the solenoid purple cable with key turned to start and no power there either.
5. I have power to other accessories as my rad fan comes on right away and doesn't turn off and the engine bay fan in the trunk comes on. I disconnected both of those for now until I move on to those issues....

Will be doing a pile more searching on here but does anything jump out for anyone?

Thanks
Don

Honest to gawd I hope this is all entertaining to everyone..... I am starting to just laugh now.

So. I looked at the clutch the other day when I was working on getting the starter sorted and didn't want to have to push in the clutch every time. I saw the switch with yellow wire to it so thought "Hey, that is the neutral safety switch." So, I pulled it out and shorted it out between the two wires, one yellow, and all was well. So..... there are two switches on the clutch. One for the neutral safety switch and the other as part of the cruise control. I was looking through the rest of Pennocks trying to find some options and I landed on a page where Bloozberry was helping someone else a few years ago out on the Neutral switch and showing picture and I realized the switch he was showing was not the switch I had been working with.... I was messing with the cruise control......

Short story long, I pulled the plug out on the nuetral switch, shorted the two wires, again yellow and another colour and low and behold the car turned over from the ignition...

What a journey this has been. I don't think I am getting fuel pump pressure yet though so on to the next item of entertainment......

Cheers
Don

Thanks for all the help on this topic folks. I have the 96 starter now working with the fuel pump working (had to replace a relay). Confirmed I have spark, confirmed I have fuel at the rail. Confirmed I have a messed up wiring harness.....

All my bad on this one. i will close this topic off as I have a bunch of questions for the DOHC gurus out there.

Thanks again for the help
