Inner Door Panel Removal (Page 2/2)

I fixed the studs in the passenger-side mirror by mixing up some JB-Weld and filling the hole. I then pushed the stud in to the hole and wiped off the excess JB-Weld. It worked great. If the stud is broken you could try drilling it out and replacing it with a piece of all-thread rod cut off to the right length. If that doesn't work, the side mirrors from the 1984-1988 Firebirds and Camaros will fit if you need a complete replacement.

I have to voice a little disagreement with the method used in the video posted by ltlfrari. Grabbing the door panel and yanking it off with your hands is a good way to break the holes where the umbrella fasteners are inserted. You also stand a chance of breaking the metal pieces at each upper corner, away from the panel. Best to use a door panel removal tool to insert behind the door panel and exert the pressure against the fastener, instead. The structural material our panels are made from is weak and it really isn't difficult to break the holes where the fasteners are inserted.

The tool on the left is the one that works best on our door panels.

Best way to remove the inner door panel is to remove the arm rest, then remove the door latch plate, then use a door panel removal tool to pry out each door clip one by one going around the door. The trick is to make sure that the remover tool is always around the clip before you pry it out. Otherwise you will tear the panel. When all clips have been pried out then you just lift the panel away. . Once you have fixed the mirror its a good idea to replace the water barrier with THIN soundproofing insulation. and press/snap the clips back into the door one by one starting at the top and going around the panel one by one.

The driver's side mirrors are at a premium.

That's the side that gets ripped of the most.

I'll look around here.

The posts on the mirror are threaded. I'll try a little welding to see if it works. See if I can weld some studs to it.

It's always good to have many solutions to a single problem.

Even better, is to have someone that knows exactly what they're doing, but I don't have that.

By chance, a while back, I passed a small local junk yard and spotted a small 84 Fiero sitting in the back. So I stopped by. Driver's Side mirror on a pretty smashed up Fiero. The little guy looked pretty sick.

Inquired with the guy there and for $35 plus tax he will pull it for me.

My mirror is remote.

How do you remove the guts from these things?!

The only thing I see are two small screws behind the mirror itself. I hope all these mirror housings are the same!!!

Someone recently posted that they aren't the same inside. Something about the screw mounts inside the housing.

I posted the info concerning the differences in the shells.

There are three screws, not two...
Keep looking behind the edge of the mirror.

You cannot weld zinc.
