Fierofool, No doubt there is a VSS somewhere. What I mean is that it has a conventional screw-in dip stick, and level is not measured by pulling the VSS with the gear on it.
Blacktree: the turkey baster is a good idea, I had thought of that...But, not knowing how long ago the oil has been changed, I know the previous owner of 10 years never changed it, and I've had it a year now Do you guys think I should just change the oil for piece of mind , and with what, GM, or something like Penzoil synchromesh. The oil in there now is very clean, but I don't know what kind is in there. I can't notice any noises back there, but then again I'm half deaf... Any brand of synchromesh fluid (GM, Pennzoil, Royal Purple, etc) will be better than plain old 5w30 oil. The gearbox can go a VERY long time between fluid changes, because it doesn't get much contamination inside. And it doesn't get hot enough to break down the oil.

Thanks Blacktree. For piece of mind, and to get the correct level in it, I'm gonna change it...

While i was searching for the side plug graphics, I read the GM specs and it said just 2 quarts (1.9L). Also, today while demonstrating something to another Fiero owner I checked for the side plug. There wasn't one.
My Getrags both have VSS's with fluid level marks on them. Can't say the 86 is original but I am about 98% sure the 87 is. Both have dipsticks, too.

This one's in an 86 Gt 2.8. To save me searching my manuals, and getting conflicting info. Is there a specific weight syncro oil the Getrag 5 speeds take?

Tony, I supplied a link to the OP with your helpful info three weeks ago... and even gave a link to that a day ago here... but for whatever reason there appears to be a need to hash it all out over and over again.

I didn't find the plug because I was checking in the wrong area.

The 88 FSM says to check the fluid on a level surface "when the transmission is cool enough to let you rest your fingers on the transaxle case. To check the fluid level, remove dipstick and read level indicated."
Based on that information, I suspect the dipstick should be fully seated.
I ran Mobil One 5W30 in my four speed for years, I could tell a big difference from the dino juice that was originally in it.

There was never a definitive answer about the 'fill-to' hole on the side of the transmission as a starting point. Thank you guys. I'll go with Synchromesh 5/30.
