E-brake handle question (Page 2/2)

Interesting... GM made a change to the assembly...
Look at # of teeth for the ratchet.
top is 12 but bottom is 10. Normal operating range is 5-8 clicks.

Triangle get hit by link to the button to release the ratchet.
You might get away w/ fixing but if that fails w/ P-brake on then you hope the arm is loose enough to disable the P-brake. If not could be a big pain.

Your right it is a Big pain, that's what happened to me twice. That's why I did a little mod to beef up that triangle. Luckily both times it was in my garage.

You are 100% correct. I pushed that nub back into the cutout and it works perfectly again. I will spot weld exactly where you mention and (hopefully) this shouldn't happen again.

Thank you for all your help, guys! I wasn't expecting a parking brake handle problem to catch so much interest.

Matthew

Edit: Wow, mine looks so old and crappy compared to the other pic posted... Maybe I'll sandblast it before re-installing.

On a side note.. any tips on removing the plastic part of the handle in case I decide to clean the assembly? I notice when i push the release button I have access to unclip a spring.

The level is hidden.
Don't do any "cleanup." Only to remove loose crap and maybe careful lube w/ silicon. (Silicon keep water out and clear oil/grease doesn't stain if it get on things.)

Note: Remember to lift handle a bit then press button. That will unload the ratchet to prevent damage you have here.

That's good advise about lifting the handle before pushing the button.

I am confused by what you say about "The level is hidden."?

I'd like to be able to remove mine, too. The corrosion inside the handle makes it stick. I'd like to clean it and relube.
