(that's why i didn't mention it) but thanks for bringing it up.

My '86 GT has a Getrag, because it was a late run, and has allot of '87 up-grade parts (stock) but it does not have a dip stick. I don't think they put dip-sticks in until '88, but (like mine) maybe some late-run '87 Getrags have the '88 dip-stick up-grade. In the old days (50's, 60's, 70's) we used to call those cars halves, like 86 1/2, etc. Mfg. have always done that, when they run out of a certain year part, they substitute the next year part. Kind of an end-of-the-year run bonus. ;-)

I've been told the Getrags with the dip-stick ('88's) have a problem with the third and 5th gear synchromesh gears going out. I do know if you find an '88 with over 100K on it, some times the third, 5th, or both are out (can't get them in the gears) My '87 model Getrag has a notchy 5th gear, with 104K on it, and I replaced the input and output shaft bearings. The input was bad, so I replaced them both. I switched to Royal Purple Synchromax oil, and that helped the whole tranny shift smoother, but 5th is still a little notchy. If I would have had the press tool, I would have replaced all the synchros, but I will say, with a little over 100K on mine, the insides were shiny and new looking, with no evidence of wear. My sincros looked just fine too, but I guess some times looks deceive...?

Finally ID'd mine as a Getrag and lots of good info here, but since I lost a lot of lube from doing two axles, what is the refill capacity?

Buddycraigg, if you're still out there... from your info I've determined that I have an Isuzu 5-speed, but it needs to be rebuilt and the parts places list two different versions of it - one with all synchro rings single piece, and one with 1st and 2nd synchro rings two piece. Is there any way to tell externally which one I have?

I have no idea.

Just FYI, an 87 Fiero Getrag I had from a dropout, had the screw in style dipstick. 88 is when they got the "locking" actual dipstick.

Just for closure then, the trans guy (25 years experience) who's doing the work for me couldn't tell from the outside either; he tore it down and it has all single piece synchros. It remains, though, that rebuild kit suppliers list two different kits for 85-88 Fieros, so if you want to rebuild one, you'll need to tear it down to figure out what to order.

Where are you getting your rebuild kit from?

After looking around the web for a little while it seems like these guys look like one of the biggest:drivetrain.com. They claim to use name brand parts; we'll see. Website is not very easy to use, but guy on the phone was very helpful.
