Got a great deal on a 4.9L powertrain with 60K miles about 6 years ago. Did leakdown tests, fogged the cylinders and put it in storage. Just had a chance to complete the swap in the last 8 months. Yup, I know its old tech and this swap is not done much anymore, but the price was right and the engine was in great shape. With 275 ft lbs of torque and not adding much weight, its bound to be a fun driving experience. This proved to be a budget swap as everything cost under $1600 to complete .. Now to clean the fuel injectors (while on the rail) to try and remedy the off idle stumble.

Of all the budget swaps, this is still the one that puts the biggest smile on people's faces when they hit the gas pedal for the first time. Runs out of steam at the high end... but nothing is more fun from light to light. Can't wait to hear more about your swap!

and honestly how our cars are built, light to light or twisties is all we really need and spend the most time doing.[This message has been edited by Spadesluck (edited 05-29-2019).]

The reasons that I built this swap; the 4.9L/4T60e with 60K miles on it was inexpensive, the engine and trans were super clean. Total cost with the ECM and Caddy harness was $600. The torque especially at the lower end was impressive and the engine was about the same weight as the 2.8L. The owner of the junkyard in Phila said that there is no demand for these engines and he regularly gets in old low mileage Cadillac's to recycle. The good: Reliable engine in stock form, relatively easy swap, excellent price vs torque ratio, V8 exhaust growl. Great HWY mileage (29mpg?) Fun to drive. The bad: Older technology, parts can be hard to find, some obsolete, expensive, and usually not in stock locally. Gas mileage around town can be 15-17mpg Overall: I am pleased with the overall result but in the future I will be looking at doing an LFX engine swap (300HP w 11.5:1 compression)------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. Very tidy Dennis, and you know my favorite feature besides the torque and the sound? The oil filter is on the top!

How much of a mess does it make during oil changes?

Thanks for the good words. Now on to your install. IIRC, you did one of the very first 3800SC swaps and did a 4.9L swap before most of us did. I also recall your all out performance build on a 4.9L done from scratch. If there is anyone quite the expert on these it would have to be yourself. Agree with your comments on torque and sound but not sure about that oil filter on top. Its easy to change for sure but a spill might end up being a messy job. ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite.
