Building the Ultimate 2.8L (Page 1/9)
DarcyJL MAR 23, 05:24 PM
Alright after alot of time and effort collecting parts i have decided to start gathering opinions on my 2.8L build. Let me start off by saying that i dont want to do a swap and i also dont want to stroke my motor. Well pretend i have too much money and im not getting my hopes high for hp and torque.

Anyways from what i have researched i want to stick with 1.52 rocker arms as the 1.6 require stiff springs which will eat cams up. I also have heard multiple time that the 260h cam is the cam to go with as it is not to far off of stock

Alright so here goes. I have Falconer ported heads and the full Falconer intake so what else do you guys think i should add to the build sheet here. It will put on a few thousand kms each year and be driven hard only part of the time. I would like to go for the 200hp area and be fairly reliable. Give me any opinions yo u have other thank swap it or stroke it. Remeber im rich and want to keep the 2.8 haha so i neeed to know what parts will give me the best results.

Im talking cams, injection setup,

Valve work, springs, rocker arms, lifters , timing chain kit. The best of the best if money was no object and you had to use the 2.8.

First off, the 1.6 roller rockers work great with the stock cam and stock springs, so why not with a 260? No problems with mine.

Second, a quality valve cut is nice, preferably at least a 3 angle.

Third, porting, porting porting. You can check my old thread for all the details.

You might want to consider Total Seal rings. If you want to deck the heads a bit, don't go over 9.5 compression, for a usable gas range.

Be sure to plastigauge your bearing surfaces to ensure you have correct tolerances.

Try an upgraded alternator. I use a 95 amp with no air, but you might want the CS 120 for a A/C car

Try pulling out your rods and cylinders and weigh them all. Balancing is a good idea and doesn't cost much.

Those are good starting thoughts.

Ya i also have new forged rods. Was going to find some good pistons and put those in. Falconer heads are ported but i will go over them again. I have just read in more than one post that doing a cam and 1.6 rockers seems to eat the cam up i guess ill get more info on that. Anyone have suggestions on a good brand of pistons? I wont be running a/c or cruise or really anything other than gauges and lights.

Any specific reason why you want to retain the 2.8. I think - even if you are on a budget - that finding a good low mileage 3.4 or even a good rebuildable 3.4 with your heads, 260H cam, headers, intake porting, TB porting, etc. would be the way to go for a "stock" look and added performance that is reliable and economical. The 3.4 other than some drill work for the starter mount is a direct bolt in motor. Just my 2 cents!

Because we are building the "Ultimate 2.8" not the "Ultimate 3.4" .

I would like to keep my car numbers matching and i dont want to stroke.

NO SWAPS!!!!!

Thanks for the advice but it seems like every thread started about 2.8s turn into the "why wouldnt you threads".

Im not looking for stock look as i have a Falconer ITB Intake.

What parts would build the ultimate 2.8l ????

You cant use 1.6 rockers with 260 cam and factory springs, you will get crazy valve float. I'm building a 2.8 too and I have the 260H. Get a truelo intake for the upper intake with a larger throttle body. You are going to want some headers as well. Higher compression for sure just because hotter cams like higher compression and it will get you some more power. Upgrading the ECM to the 7730 has given some people more horsepower as well. And Cams get eaten because of the lack of zinc in oil. Just get some zddp additive. Also having the falconer heads, they may already have performance valve springs installed, or at least have had the spring seats machined down to fit performance valve springs. All the performance springs I have ever seen need an install height of 1.7 inches, vs the stock ~1.6 inches. Get some calipers and measure your installed spring height and if it is 1.7, performance valve springs only cost like 40 bucks and you can install them yourself easy. Then you can run a much bigger cam.

I've heard a lot of good things about the H272 cam with 1.52:1 roller rockers, but from what I understand, it's pretty similar to an H260 with 1.6:1 roller rockers.

No need for truelo....Falconer intake will supply more air anyways.

Do everything that's recommended in these articles and you will have the ultimate 2.8!
