while LBJ had fears about the civil rights bills
he supported them
unlike most of the south

remember I lived and went to schools both in the north with everyone
and in all white southern schools before 65

the cons were cons first and still are
just better dog whistlers now days

''blood and iron'' said the rump

well we heard it

We are about the same age.
LBJ did have misgivings, and if the vote in both houses of the Congress had been more divided, he would not have signed the bill.

Real "salt of the earth" kinda guy. "Great Society" my ass.

And yeah. Snopes tried to discredit or "explain it away", but they also posted a bunch of other stuff that was absolutely attributed to him.

I honestly don't think he would have done that after making these public statements

"No memorial oration or eulogy could more eloquently honor President Kennedy's memory than the earliest possible passage of the civil rights bill for which he fought so long," Johnson told the lawmakers.

Then, serving notice on his fellow southern Democrats that they were in for a fight, he said: "We have talked long enough in this country about equal rights. We have talked for one hundred years or more. It is time now to write the next chapter, and to write it in the books of law."

So an elected official enacted a policy based on giving the voters what they wanted and you think that is somehow a bad thing? I thought that was the entire basis of our political system.

BTW the Democrats lost the south because of the Civil rights Act, and Johnson predicted that also.

You seem to be a fan of LBJ. Personally, I despise the man. Worse than Ray hates Nixon. I hope he is in a nice warm corner, someplace.

Like all politicians, LBJ knew where his bread was buttered, and by whom. He bought himself a guaranteed "niche".

The "homage to JFK" thing was pure bullshit, IMO. Political theater.
JFK was staunchly opposed to our involvement in Viet Nam. LBJ escalated it through the roof. (I'll also remind you that Nixon started the withdrawals. Ford finished it, as sloppy as it was.)

Edit - Sure has drifted a long way from "Colorado".

Especially if LBJ was involved with the assassination of JFK.

That seems to be a popular opinion.

But it's not true (at least not so far) according to a book I'm reading. I'm about halfway through.

(Spoiler: CIA, among others. Behind the scenes, he wasn't well liked.)

I 100% disagree with the way Johnson handled Viet Nam, but my opinion is not controlled by party affiliation. So I am able to praise his work pushing through the Civil Rights Act, The Voters Right Act, and the Fair Housing act.

I am capable of praising a President for good work no matter what party he was from.

More on commentary on efforts to influence the upcoming election.....

Some of you are sure to disagree. It's your right to do so. As it should be.
