What is the gov't getting in return for these forgiving debts, that's right, gratitude. Here's a novel idea: If you accept the government forgiving your student debt, lets say 80k, you owe the gov't that many years in the military to cover it, got a bachelors, masters or doctorate, you are an officer. flunked out, or realized college wasn't for you then you become enlisted. GI Bill in reverse (somewhat, been 40 years since I looked at the gi bill).

While it's not a bad idea, many borrowers have been paying minimum payments for a very long time and may not be able to carry their own weight in the military. I wouldn't wish to share a foxhole with someone that can't carry their own weight or could stay awake during their turn to be a look out. We're talking about some long term debtors in some cases.

For those in favor of this, please provide your address and I will forward you my son's tuition payment for the upcoming semester, and subsequent bills until he finishes school.

The service needs latrine duty personal also, I'm sure we could find a spot for a 50 y/o who got a degree in acting, and now works as a barista, already qualified for mess duty.

Understood. While I served longer in the Army than the Marines, I still think like a Marine and all Marines are considered Infantry. Don't want to share that foxhole with no stinking Latrine janitor.

Not sure how you came up with that

Pretty simple. You said your wife got a student loan from the government. I assumed she needed it. If not then she should not have taken it. So you hate the same people who made it possible for your wife to get a degree.

Partially correct. All federal expenditures are paid for in three ways.

  • Taxes.
  • Borrowing through bonds. Treasuries are just one form of bond as there are several others.
  • Printing more money, i.e. inflating the money supply.

The taxpayers paid for those loans and the students promised to pay the loans back. Forgiving those loans means the taxpayers got screwed.

Not only that, but Obamacare was partially paid for based on students paying back their loans. The rhetoric that reforming students loans would help pay for Obamacare was just another Democrat lie.

A nations debt to itself?

Our national debt is different from a business or individual. For example, all the profit made from interest paid to the Federal Reserve on the Federal Debt is RETURNED to the US government. Between 2011 and 2021 the Fed remitted $920 BILLION
to the US Treasury.

Many of these student loan holders have already paid enough in interest to cover the original principle of the debt, and the federal student loan system is not intended to make a profit.

You have no idea what our debt is or how it is financed do you.

Uncle Sam needs $100. How does Uncle Sam borrow that $100?
