why is the cure for inflation to rase loan rates why not tax the top 10% instead (Page 5/8)

Ya forgot

NEVER borrow for somebody else's benefit.

It blows my mind how many suckers put work expenses on personal credit cards, then are surprised when they get stiffed on it, having to bridge CC due date to re-imbursement payment date out-of-pocket

And KEEP doing it every month.

I did that all of the time, but I always got it back. I wasn't borrowing though, I was loaning.

At J.B. I would buy lunch for the class. And at my last two jobs I would pay repair and towing bills for our trucks, and permits just to get them done. Some weeks my boss owed me thousands of dollars.

But, I haven't borrowed money in over 30 years.

Did you expect it to go up with the way Nov. 8th came out? I'm not surprised at all.

The last paragraph of a new and fairly brief writeup from a reporter who's been following the "Krug'ster"

quote
[Paul] Krugman has previously warned the strong US dollar and higher rates will weigh on exports and housing demand, causing the US economy to contract. He's also cautioned the Fed may have gone too far with its [rate] hikes and put the economy in unnecessary danger.

It lines up nicely with this forum thread.

"Nobel laureate Paul Krugman says 'true' US inflation may have cooled to below 4%β€”and points to falling rental prices and slowing wage growth as proof"

Theron Mohamed for Business Insider; November 7, 2022.

Not a perfect cure, but lifestyle choices come into play there too. Did a couple or single person really need that 2500 sq.ft. house ? Families, maybe, but there are a LOT out there "who got trapped living large' just because they could at the time, with no thought to the future. And now simply dont want to change.

Does the whole house need to be at 70 ? Set the furnace for 55 or 60 and use portable radiant heaters in occupied rooms (oil-filled radiant work better and are cheaper to run than other types. Use a heat-powered fan to circulate the air. With oil/gas prices the setup pays for itself in no time then its a net saving. Still not good enough ? Move to a condo with heat included.

Do you need that honkin big truck or even car for one person to get to work ? cheaper e-bikes can be had for $500-$800 these days (2 tanks of gas in some trucks). Even if you only use it 1/2 the time, it's still a huge savings. Moped or small motorcycle if you really-really hate electric or it doesn't have the range. Gas bicycle where legal. Under 500 to build and costs me 6-7 cents/km in fuel, and mine is a bigger, modified 2-stroke. Smaller engines and and more efficient 4-strokes exist. How about public transit ? OK, of that part might not make much difference if you drive a Smart or Cooper or something along those lines.

I'm really not being a dick, just pointing out there ARE ways around the problem and how not to get into that type of situation next time ya buy a house or vehicle.

TBH, getting rid of my truck was one of the best financial choices I ever made. Right there I saved at least 8k a year for something that was more a toy and self-gratification than anything else. As a bonus the freedom from people bothering me about moving stuff for them is just incredible. If I do need a truck, in-town rentals are $20/day plus mileage and taxes, with the entire county being considered "in-town". 50 bux max. I can do a LOT of $50 rentals for that 8k and dont have to worry about maintaince and repair. If the weather is crappy and I want it enclosed, one click of the mouse and can reserve a full-sized cargo van for the same price.

Here is what I mean about choices.

I needed a new laptop bag since the old one was getting worn out. AND I need/want a sissy-bar bag to build a back-up battery pack for the bike. Yup, I am a prima-donna and have to have leather. Canvas wont do.

The old, easy way was to jump on Amazon...

https://amzn.to/3V2tgpZ

and

https://amzn.to/3A3yklU

About 300 bucks.

I decided to take a walk for an hour this morning and hit up the thrift shops for some shop t-shirts, and check out luggage while I was there.

The laptop bag is near-new and almost identical to the $200 bag from Amazon. It cost me 3 bucks. The suitcase (real leather again) will get cut-down and re-made into a sissy bag and cost me 5. The left-over leather from downsizing it will get made into the straps to hold it in place.

For some reason I cant understand I have no problem paying my utility bills or buying food without taking out loans to do it.

It would have been just as easy to make a few clicks and have the bags dropped in my lap in a few days. It was a choice to check out cheaper options.

Yeh.

NOW, if I could only cure those 6 words that throw every man into mortal financial terror.

"Can I borrow your bank card"

When are those android-robot wives going on sale again ????
