I did a little bit of research on this, as it's an interesting question.

It's hard to find info that is unbiased, of course, but I have come to the conclusion that we owe a lot more than is owed to us.

It is comforting to some extent to find out that most of our debt is owed to ourselves, due to trusts set up for Social Security and Medicare.

Foreign owned debt is relatively low, the line 'We borrow money from China to lend it to someone else' doesn't appear to hold water.
