Let's talk about the media, and what journalism should be in a free society (Page 13/38)

I also count about 3 VW Busses in that picture.

I have the entire Jimmy Hendrix Woodstock performance on LaserDisc. It's probably the most amazing video I've ever seen of Woodstock or the performers. This video was filmed about 12 feet in front of Jimmy. There's a bunch of "remastered" ones that I've seen on YouTube, and none of them compare to what I have on LaserDisc. It's awesome...

Anyway, they do a whole video presentation of Woodstock before... (a lot of high and naked people walking around), but there are sooo many VW Busses. The thing is... Woodstock was in 1969. The "Bay" window VW Bus came out in 1968. Most of the VW Busses it showed in the video were all 68-69 VW Busses... so it makes me realize the people going to Woodstock were not necessarily just poor commune-style hippies.

Most of what people think of as '60s pop culture was a farce, a bunch of pretenders like one of our own, who didn't have a clue. Just as 98% of those who call themselves "bikers" aren't, anyone who says he was a "hippy" wasn't.

On a side note, that picture was Powder Ridge Connecticut, 1970.

Yeah, I guess most of my views of the 60s are from television and the media. My parents weren't hippies, so that wasn't really a think for them. But you always got the impression that Woodstock, campus protests, Vietnam war, and (now classic) rock were the key things. There's obviously more, but my opinion of Woodstock was that that 1000s of people left their communes, with little to no money, all hitch hiked on trucks to go to some big free festival, and a few people managed to get their VW busses and other **** vehicles running, and what little cash they had left, they were able to buy drugs so they could be stoned the entire time. Haha...

Turns out, it seems like it was mostly wealthy and middle class kids with no jobs (and funded by mom and dad) went to this big fancy 3-day concert.

My generation's "woodstock" if you will, was Lolapalooza. I went to the one in 1996 when I was 18, but they had one in 1999 which was trying to be the new Woodstock (if you will). It was a multi-day version of the Lolapalooza I went to, but it basically became a disaster. There was a whole documentary on it. Like... I'm almost embarrassed, but people were raped, the entire place was trashed, they lit entire rows of port-o-potties on fire, and people destroyed the stages and one person stole a car and drive it into the mosh pit and lit it on fire. I mean, it was bad. I definitely do not remember Lolapalooza 1996 like that... it was a 1-day (all day) festival with a lot of really good bands, and that was it.

Typical leftoid.

Trump's direct quote of the week is "if I am not elected there will be a bloodbath".

Insane indeed.

Ah yes. The original Good Times van.

A classic VW van (late 60's, early 70's) go for good money. This one goes for $47,500.

Notice the extra factory windows above the chassis.

Years ago, my neighbor had a visitor who spent some time with her. He slept in his VW van which was stretched and had the pop up camper top.

the late 60/70 type 4 vans/bus/transporters motors are much better rides but not BIG money collectables

poptops are call westfalias they were type4s before the waserpumpers and the audi motor fwd vans with bad auto trans 4k fix 20 years ago

the new westfalias are mopars with vw trim and know to fail auto trans guess that is the new VW thing

my fav is the one the german chic on top gear set the ring lap with a 4wd turbo 911 drive train stuffed in it

I had a friend in high school who had a '67 23-window. A bunch of us went up to Saguaro lake for Easter weekend and on the way back we stopped at a little trading post. As we pulled in, someone came up along side and asked, "Did you know you are on fire?"

We all bailed out to see flames licking out from under the engine bay and by the time the fire department arrived, the thing was burnt to the ground.

I took the following picture in the mid '90s.

The van in the near lane was gutted and had a mid engine V8, but the street legal turboed Wasserboxer with full interior kicked ass, turning mid-13s.

I got to meet Gene Berg around that same time and toured his shop. He passed just a couple of years later.

Yeah, like Ray said, the one in the link is definitely not a 1973. That's a 1967 or older. My wife and I have a 1973, which is called the "Bay Window" bus. It's a "Deluxe Bus" which just meant it had a few more options. We still have it, but it's been in storage for like 13 years. still looks like this, but the tires are flat... lol.

That's pretty sweet to see those guys race like that, haha...

Yeah, fire was a big issue for these VW Busses. Much more so than Fieros, but for some reason it never got the "rap" for catching fire. The problem was all as a result of the flexible fuel lines. The fuel lines were rubber, but also wrapped in some kind of fabric. They wouldn't show wear because the fabric wouldn't really come apart. I had that issue too, but I used a pusher pump much further up, and had replaced the hose from the pump to the carburetor. I could never get the Bus to go over 40 miles an hour, no matter how hard I tried... even with a rolling start and finding the only hill I could find. I discovered that the fuel pump was literally sucking air through all the cracks in the fuel line that connected the fuel tank to the fuel pump. Had I re-used the old fuel line when I spliced it in, I'd have been shooting fuel out of all those cracks on the other side. Most people still used a mechanical fuel pump, and these hoses would split and just dump fuel all over the engine compartment. They ran hot as **** too since they were air cooled, so... you know the rest of the story.

But they are solid cars. I filled one up with almost 60 bags of mulch. I took the seats out the back, went to Home Depot, and just started stacking bags in there... went through more than a pallet, and the Bus had no problems getting it back home (only 3 miles from home).

In fact he just re-iterated that point by "ENCOURAGING" Russia to attack other NATO countries.

A claim while posting your personal opinion. Proof ?

Very good info rayb. Thanks. VW also made a panel wagon van, with no windows.
