How little or how much of a hand should be ascribed to liberalism and liberal governance—in substance, if not in name?
I can't speak to that question with any confidence or authority, because I have never researched it.
I am confident that I can point to some other people who, likewise, could not speak to that question intelligibly, because they are in the same underinformed "boat" as I am, when it comes to an in-depth understanding of postwar Nagasaki.
I know these people by their screen names.

That's a good, honest answer, rinse.
I too realize that there are a nearly infinite number of influences the shape the future of any city, state, nation, or town.
Detroit was, at one time, the richest city in the world. Some areas are still very opulent, other areas look like war zones.
As I'm not an expert of the histories of the two cities over the span of the last 60 years, I will leave comments to those who are.[This message has been edited by olejoedad (edited 08-08-2023).]

Lets see, steel production moved to China, car imports, manufacturing moved. Plants closed down, the working class suffered. the well off just moved some things around on a portfolio

I don't think that could not have happened.

Excerpt:
| quote | What Is an Example of Comparative Advantage?
America trades with Vietnam in another hypothetical relationship.
As a high-skill economy, American companies are excellent at producing valuable products and services, but not cheaply. Even a minimum-wage worker in the U.S. is expensive by some global standards. Most workers in the U.S., given the nation's education and business infrastructure, are extremely expensive.
As a developing economy, Vietnamese firms are not as good at producing high-skill products but can produce large volumes of work quite cheaply. Most workers in Vietnam can work for a small fraction of the cost of a U.S. employee due to a combination of skill, availability, and currency.
In a clothing-related trade deal, American companies could import shirts from Vietnam. This trade deal would allow U.S. firms to design patterns—as well as the technology for printing them—to take advantage of the U.S.' skill advantage. It would allow Vietnamese firms to mass-produce the physical garments, to take advantage of Vietnam's inexpensive labor pool. The result is that both markets increase their total wealth: Vietnam gets a net trade surplus, and American consumers get more shirts for less money. |

ALL big cities in the US began declining in the late 50's through the 70's when everyone with money moved to the suburbs where they could have a yard with a white pickett fence i.e. The American Dream. The poor where left behind and they mostly voted for Democrats.
So there is a correlation between Democrat control and the decline of large cities, but there is no "causation". There was no democrat policy that made everyone want to move to the suburbs. It was just considered "moving up".

I'll bet personal experience over someone else's solely, and sadly, "Google informed worldview" ANY TIME.
Some people have actually lived life and done things. Some just peer through an internet keyhole at what others have done and then criticize.[This message has been edited by randye (edited 08-09-2023).]
