KW Coilover Review (Page 1/1)

My experience with KW coilovers for anyone that is thinking about them for a suspension upgrade.

First a little background. My DD from 2005 to 2023 was a 2005 Hyundai Tiburon. I lost it to an accident in an interstate construction zone, 500 miles from home and not driveable. The insurance company totaled it. Shortly after I bought it I drove a friends Roush Mustang and was really impressed by the way it handled. I wanted to make my Tib feel like that. A bit of research and I got a front strut bar for the understeer, different sway bars and springs, Koin yellow strut inserts, a few poly bushings and a Borla catback. The ride was a bit stiff but it handled great, quick turn in, flat cornering, very solid feel, stable at speed and sounded nice too. I have seen the Tiburon described as a poor man's Korean Ferrari. It was the most fun DD I have had.

I was a bit limited on a replacement vehicle, in my world a proper car has 2 doors and 3 pedals. A new car wasn't in the picture and after driving 235,000 miles in my Tib nothing I looked at felt right. I searched for another Tiburon and ended up with a 2006, 1 owner, California car with 35,000 miles. Nice car but wanted it to handle like my old Tib. Koni stopped making the strut inserts and the only quality coilovers I could find were KW V1s. They are a bit pricy but this may well be my last car so I gave in and bought a set. KW says they use vehicle-specific damper construction and tuning and all KW coilover suspensions have a vehicle-specific basic setup that is perfectly adapted to the respective car after test drives on country roads, highways, the Nürburgring Nordschleife and on KW’s 7post test rig. You actually get what you paid for. They are all stainless steel and the spring seat is a composite material that prevents corrosion so I will still be able to adjust them years down the road and the upper mount holes are slotted for camber adjustment. The instructions are good, installation and ride height adjustment are very easy. I added basically all the same mods as I did to my old car also. After driving it several thousand miles with the KWs I will say that they are worth every penny and then some. This Tib feels better than my old one, KWs are more compliant than the Konis and car just feels more solid and stable. This Tib is fahrvergnügen.
