I am still going to blame you if we have problems cause you did post this up before we looked at or even thought about a 300zx, lol. People on the web should be able to see what is going to happen before it happens and post their thoughts. LOL

I helped a friend do this back in the day. That was an all iron engine too! Imagine that RX7 with the LSx series engine with the six speed! Woo hoo!

I love the RX7 its really the first time an engeneer truely thought outside of the bos since the standard combustion engine was created Wndgen have allot of issues and its a nightmare finding a mechanic who knows enough to work on them I would go 3rd gen if you have the money and why not turbo? They hold their vallue very well and are the closest to perfect wieght distro you can get 3x power to wieght ratio of standard combustion they do burn oil but they are diesigned that way. You could always tell him he has to learn to work on it himself and let him know its going to take allot of time and effort buy him one that needs some work for cheap throw him at it if he loses inerest you can likely still get your money back they have a good fallowing.

Series I and II look the best however the motors need rebuilding just as often with or without turbos so may as well get turbo series 3-4 motor in one as still requires work.

Ah...reading this thread brings back some memories. Here's a shot taken not long after I bought my Fiero.

Oh...and the car in the back is a "lightly modified" Camaro.

I had a gf that had one of the first gen RX7s. She did no maintenance and drove the crap out of it. I dont remember of it ever breaking down in 2-3 years she had it. It was yellow, and I had to fix one side of it once when she wrecked it. Seemed like a fun little car for a Japanese one.

From everything I've ever read about them the engineers were very successful with this aspect of the design.

Theres a specialty car shop not to far from me that ONLY deals with RX7s. I dont know the name, but theyre in Pataskala, Ohio on US rt 16 (East Broad St). you might find out anything you need to look for from them. It might be called The Rotary Connection.

Try to steer him to a Miata. We love ours. The aftermarket is tremendous. (He is going to want to mod it. Everyone does.) The cost of entry for a decent one is about $4K, at least around here. They improved incrementally every year. I think the 2nd gen (99-05(?)) are my favorites. The first gens are fine, but get a 94 or later. In 94 the displacement was bumped from 1.6 to 1.8 liters. Not much more power, but a much better torque curve, as I understand it. (Ours is a 97.) Did I mention that parts are plentiful?
Bone stock, ours was nearly as quick as my 3.4 Fiero. It's much easier to drive hard. (Might not want to tell him that.) It's a much better "driver's car" than the Fiero ever thought about being.
Most anything you would want to know... http://forum.miata.net/vb/
Here's ours. (The wheels have been changed. Same style but less dish. There was fender interference with these.)

Miatas are typically stereo typed as girl cars I don't think you son would like one. we used to have a 1st gen rx7, unfortunately we did not get it running and got rid of it but I love the body style.
