I've had an IH since 1992...an IH refrigerator, circa 1946.

A friend gave me this fridge when I moved to Sioux City...it was in his garage for about 25 years. It took about 3 days to defrost it when I got it, but it has worked flawlessly ever since.

I'm shocked to find it's now a collectors item.

Even for a grand, I wouldn't give it up.

Ok, carb has been rebuilt by me. I will try to get it installed and running this weekend. I have to fix the hot air to choke pipe, from the manifold (brake line material with large fitting).

Will this engine's valve seats live on modern gas? When did engines start being able to run on no lead fuel? This might be a real problem towing.

In my family we run a lot of old stuff, not modified in any way. A couple of tractors from the 40's and early fifties, Triumph and Moto Guzzi cycles, a 1950 industrial construction site air compressor. A 1959 Olds, etc. We haven't had any problems. I used to hear rumors about the valve burning thing, but I sometimes think people just like finding excuses for things that were happening anyway. People were burning up valves long before unleaded fuels came around. I'm kinda old, but the standard expectations back in the 50's were 75-100K and a valve job was getting close. Some vehicles, especially Buick and Cadillac, seemed to be far longer lived.

I have read up on the IH engine and there is no need to worry about running unleaded gas. I was concerned also, but it seems that IH used a different iron mixture for the heads and they are harder.

Next issue:

runs great when timing is set to about 20! EEK. base timing is 0 degrees, timed off of #8 (yes, different than a normal V8).
Rebuilding the carb didn't fix the timing issue, sadly.

So I am going to look for a vac. leak (2 lines to check/plug.... pvc and brake booster). Then I will check to see if the dist is off a tooth, but I doubt it was pulled, based on the grim and the fact that I had to really work it to get it free to adjust. BUT I am not sure what the history of the engine is.

The dist. could need to be rebuilt. I need to verify the advance is working as maybe something inside the dist. is bad, or ???

Anyway, still working on it.

Will do. Cleaned up the dist. last night. Need to replace some weight bushings. I may scrap the points and get the pertronix kit for $100....

As a young man in the early 70's I worked for a local farmer who bought a new 1 ton International dually stake bed truck. It had no shock absorbers, they were optional. Driving it down country roads at speed was an adventure.
