95 Dodge Neon, probable bent valves? (Page 3/4)

Your torqing sounds right, with out haveing my felpro book to double check.

The only thing we've done with the extra turns is marking something or holding a card cut to 45 deg or 90 deg and turning it to match.

I'm not familiar with a heat in procedure. I've never done it other than letting it idle to make sure its not leaking anywhere.

Comp headgasket arrived today. I have one question about it. I checked it next to the Felpro MLS gasket and noticed the Comp gasket is missing a coolant passage hole.

Should I get out my calipers and measure the hole and pop one through the comp gasket in that spot? I'd hate to have a hotspot on that cyclinder because coolant flow was blocked off. Other then that one hole all the other holes line up and there aren't any in the MLS gasket that aren't in the comp gasket.

Bump.

Should I put a hole were the headgasket doesn't have one but the other does?

Sorry I didn't see your post.

I don't think there'll be a prob adding the hole. Just overlay the gaskets and mark it. Make the hole a little smaller than the one that's precut. Just to make. Sure there is ample sealing area.

Thanks! I'll be sure to do that tomorrow before I reassemble it then . The new head bolts showed up today so I pulled it back apart and checked the flatness again. I wish I had a granite table I could use to inspect it with my dial indicator, like the one I used for inspecting parts when I worked at the machine shop back in Cali. Ah well, hopefully this time it works out.

I hope it does. I know its a pain to have to tear stuff down after just fixing it.

Good luck

Well, I got it back together and replaced the radiator and thermostat while I was at it (the radiator was stock and considering all the little metallic looking filings in the fluid, I don't doubt the previous owners probably used radiator seal in it several times). So far, so good. I drove it around today (over 40 miles) and it appears to have finally sealed up.

Almost 2 weeks later and it's still running good. I pulled apart the old head and was suprised to find a couple of the lobes on the cam had been chipped when the pistons hit the valves. In the future I might look into getting a 2.4 from a Neon SRT or a PT Cruiser to swap into the car, atleast those aren't interference engines.

I see your problem with the MLS headgasket, assuming that is the gasket you took off. You did not coat it! Unless you coat it with the stuff the install sheet recommends it will never seal.
Khw SEP 26, 11:41 PM
That's probably it then. I read the sheet that came in the gasket set, but it didn't say anything about a coating. I'll have to look into that though because one of my neighbors stopped me this evening to ask me about a problem they are having with there 02 Honda Accord. He doesn't speak real good english, but enough that I can get the general idea of what he's saying. He started up the Accord and pulled the oil cap off. You could feel the exhaust gasses pulsing out of the oil fill opening. I told him I'd look into it and see what it might be. The engine runs fine, so I doubt he's got bad rings but that's possible to I suppose. I think he wants me to fix it for him, he'd pay of course... I guess that's what I get working on my cars around here. When people see me strip the body and interior off two cars and swap them within a weekend, and then see me tear the engine down and put it back together... When they see a car go in my garage that's a bunch of different colors and come painted all shiny and pretty... They get the idea that I'm good with cars... /sigh.
