I would say 50,000 miles is also low when changing Apex Seals but unless you want to be buying an engine there is no way I would wait until 100,000 either. Mine went out and destroyed the engine around 92,000 (alot of which were highway miles). I wasn't even racing the engine I was just setting at idle when they went, no warning signs engine ran strong all the way up until it died. I believe the rule of thumb is between 60,000 - 80,000 Miles. The Seals themselves aren't all that expensive just the labor taking the engine out and apart to replace them is what's going to cost.

I just bought an 84 rx7 gsl, i just didnt know how to break it to the fiero community. i bought it because it is very similar to a fiero, power is almost the same, pop up headlights, 2 seats, four wheel disc brakes (on some models), limited slip differential, drivetrain capable of withstanding stupid amounts of torque, plus i got a smoking deal, also an fb rx7 accepts a wide range of engine swaps and modifications, close to 50/50 weight distribution, trans tunnel is huge because the trans sits so high up to mate to the rotory engine, very rigid body, fairly easy to work on, if you know your way around a carb the 12a is easy and the 13 b is pretty easy regardless. apex seals scares alot of people away but its not that bad, sure they might go out faster than a regular engine blows a head gasket but in reality they are really easy to replace comparitivly, when i sit in my rx it reminds me of my fiero, its almost like the designers of the two cars were twins who were seperated at birth, they had very similar ideas but tackled them in diffrent ways. if you love your fiero you will love an rx7,

My old room mate had an 85 GS, purchased new. Sucker ran forever. He sold it with ~120K on the odo. New owner killed it within a month.

The one to get is an '85 GSL-SE (as far as gen 1's go). Very similar specs to a Fiero GT.....135 HP, same 0-60 times, skidpad, etc. They also came with a limited slip differential, 4WDB, etc. It is on my short list of interesting 80's cars to own before I die.

Had a 1972 RX2. Fabulous little car. The apex seals did have to be replaced... I forget what the miles were. A rotary powered Fiero would be great. Don't know if anyone has tried it. For comparison, the published fuel consumption was the same as a 1972 Pinto. The RX2 would run circles around a Pinto...
