FR-S/BRZ or Veloster Turbo? (Page 2/2)

The EPA combined figures for the automatics of each are identical (28), and just a little less for the manual BRZ compared to the manual Veloster (25 vs 28).

Even if the Subaru got 3 mpg worse in real world driving, driving 1000 per month would mean the Subaru burned 4.3 more gallons of fuel.

I would not let that kind of mileage difference cause me to settle on the car I felt was my second choice If the lower mileage car was my first choice.

Crystal has just over 18,000 miles on her new Veloster that she bought March 28, 2013 and it is getting 36.5 MPG, with most of those miles coming from driving around New Orleans where she is a sales rep. She has been getting 41 MPG on the long trips she's made. Now that is in a non-turbo with the ECO setting used. I would also look at warranty, Veloster=100,000 miles Subaru=36,000...

BRZ FTW! I have a friend with one and it is a great car. Don't have an opinion on the Veloster.

I am not trashing the Veloster, but you cannot compare one person's anecdotal evidence to the EPA figures. At least comparing EPA figures is apples to apples, since they are all developed using the same testing criteria.

Also, what you get in a non-turbo is not all that relevant to what someone might get in a turbo version either.

When comparing warranties, we also want to compare apples to apples. Hyundai's 100K powertrain would compare to Subaru's 60K mile powertrain.

The Veloster has a lot of nice things going for it, but so does the BRZ. Those nice things may be very different between them. I would still recommend deciding which car fits their needs and desires better than deciding based on MPG, when the empirical evidence suggests the difference in mileage is not that great.

I can say owning a non turbo veloster their nice reliable and kinda fun to drive, however.... the 3 door design is a real pain.. the interior is cheap (what interior isant though) and its kind of slow, your looking at the same HP between the 2 but as an upside to the veloster, Warranty and a whole bunch of standard toys. And I'll also say this.. my non turbo veloster sees 50MPG on the highway and I don't even have the econ mode...

I owned the Matte Gray VT Turbo Edition and sold it after 6 months. It looked fantastic and the color is awesome in person. It was by far the easiest car to clean, and always looked clean as it would hide the dirt very well.

I got rid of the car as it just never felt right. If you hit the gas too hard it would surge all the time, almost like the turbo was too small, or the stock ecu was shutting it down. Also the handling of the car is not the best in stock form. I ended up getting rid of the crappy tires and bought some new 225s. Also lowered the car to help the stance more. The interior is "okay", but there is a lot of plastic, and the door handle gets in the way of the window switches The radio had decent sound, but the interface is slow and clunky. There is an app you can run via USB that runs on top of the stock system to allow you to watch movies, but its all based on Windows CE. So its old technology and can't handle many video formats.

This was my second Hyundai and don't think I will be getting another for a while. Their quality is just not there yet. The other Hyundai I owned was the Genesis Coupe.

It did turn a lot of heads and no one knew it came that way from the factory. The only thing good about that car was the Matte paint job.

I have never driven either of the "twins", so can't comment on them.

I say drive them both back to back if you can, then decide.
