My daily driver (when I'm not riding the Ape) is an '04 RX8. It's actually been the most trouble-free car I've owned yet. It's a hair shy of 85k miles currently, I bought it at 51k. I beat the living hell out of it and it's never missed a beat.
That said, I'm expecting to yank the engine for a fresh set of seals before it hits 100k. Basically, a rotary will run full out every day, until it eats itself. I consider the work I'm planning to be preventative maintenance for a hand-built engine. As far as I'm concerned, it's sort of similar to a new timing belt, only the wankel gets new seals when you'd normally change that part on a Honda.
In short, don't do it unless you plan to learn the ins-and-outs of how a Dorito can make 180hp/l by spinning wildly inside a giant iron kidney bean.

We are going to look at two of them in the morning. I have showed hime every other car I can think of and he has 2nd gen RX7 in his head as what he wants. I would love for him to get a Miata but he doesn't like soft top cars. I'll post what he does when he test drives one. The idea of something sometimes losses it charge when to have to deal with it in person, lol. But I'm proud he has his own taste. What other 16 year old love the 80's car style. It is normally civic's and pony cars.

Take him to a SCCA SOLO 2 race. He will see the little mazdas kicking ass, and looking good. When the green flag drops, the BS stops.

I am saddened but oh well, its his choice. He will learn on his own. I know I did, I shoulda bought my first Fiero when I had the chance and almost a decade passed before I got my first.

My younger brother owns a 1987 RX-7 and always has slow oil leaks.
Not quite sure, but I believe the rotary engines are notorious for leaking oil ------------------ Fitness Entrepreneur Founder - www.fitnesspatterns.com + www.gymgym.us

They're actually designed to burn oil, so you have to keep an eye on the level. Some people actually run 2 stroke in them instead of fixing the oil injection system.

Well the problem worked itself out, He got a 300zx that was almost mint for $1500. This middle aged lady had it in her garage and had paper work with it on all the work she had done. In the last year or so she had over $4000 of things fixed. She lost interest cause she got a Solstice and put it up for sale.

I love the 2nd gen RX-7 but will never buy one because of the issues I've heard of with the rotary engines. I wonder if there is enough room in the engine bay to swap in a Subaru boxer style engine?
