You might open the front higher for a cheaper vinyl top, but def not 1/2 way up. Depending on the car, with a canvas top, 6 inches to a foot is plenty. The canvas top wont stretch as much as vinyl. You are right, make sure its warm (70*+) so it will stretch smooth. Also lay it out flat for a day or two before installing. This is why Ill just buy a top off a car in good shape. Its already all fastened and stretched to fit. All I have to do is mount the bows to the frame of the car and fasten the rear of the top to the body. On the Sebring, the glass window is already mounted into the top at the factory. If you install a new top with a flexible window, make sure you have the window zipped up in place first.

Dont trim off the excess fabric from the windshield header till you trial fit it. You may have to pull it back loose and restretch it a little less or little more for a perfect fit. If you can close it and its tight, THEN trim off your excess. You will need the excess to be able to pull on if you want it tighter. If you need to loosen it a bit, you will need some excess so you can let it out.
