Its about 1/4" wide piece of spring steel and usually its in an area right around the shaft. The motor isnt strong enough on its own to lift the window, so the spring is there to provide a sort of counterbalance so the motor dont burn up. I dont do a lot of them, because I replace the whole regulator to avoid the issue. I know for a fact GM Astro vans have them. I dont know what others do/dont. I had a guy put just the motor in for me that didnt know what he was doing (but told me he did) because I didnt have time to mess with it. He drilled out the last rivet and heard a whamm from across the room. Came over to find one of the arms made a 3" high dent from the inside of the door.

FYI, Fieros have these springs also. You have to be careful when working on them and keep fingers out of the way (if you remove the spring). I replaced motors on the Fiero and I also installed power windows in a non-powered fiero. Take your time, look at the mechanics and you should be OK.

That's two on the spring. Time to concur with the experts. I guess I've been subconsciously trying to erase the motor replacements from my memory.

You won't have to mess with the springs at all!. I have done two Third Gens and 2 Fourth Gens and 3 Fiero motors they are the same process. To keep the window up use two brown rubber door stops wedged deep between the body and the window on BOTH sides of the window from the top. Another measure to take is also cut a piece of wood to the length with a notch in the top and stick it inside the door to hold the window up.
