The Pontiac Fiero ran its course in production and the next step for a total redesign was not something that GM wanted to invest in. Also about this time the sale of two seat automobiles was sharply declining. The two seat Buick Riata wasn't much of a success and there were Japanese imports and the Corvette to choose from. Looking back the Pontiac Fiero was one of the best selling Pontiacs that GM had at the time. About 377,000 were sold .Rather than investing in the brand GM decided to just let the entire brand die.
Today GM is just a figment of the corporation it once was. There is Cadillac, Buick , Chevrolet made in China vehicles a few trucks and that's it.

Pontiac was slated for death. GM GM killed the Pontiac V8 and even killed the full size Bonnie and moved the name to the old Lemans.

Money was being cut and plans were to scale down the division and kill it. The Fiero and Firebird brought interest to the brand and sold a ton of Grand Ams.

This moved the target to Olds when they went FWD and killed the RWD Cutlass.

Two things happened. One GM never really understood Pontiac. It had been since Delorean that they had someone willing to fight GM. The Engineers at Pontiac were not enough. Pontiac was at its best breaking rules like the GTO and even the Fiero.

The other trouble is the market changed. Automakers as a whole just need two brands. One value performance brand and one Luxury sport brand. GM making 4 different W bodies was mot cost effective.

Finally the arrival of the CUV. Performance is cool but it is not the profit center any more. Pontiac was going to be a CUV division if it lived and it would not have been much different than GMC. The Terrain was originally a Pontiac even the red dash lights.

The market now is not about cool or making just money. It is all about making the max ROI on each model.

The Fiero did needed it to do but there never really was a big future for Pontiac based on pure economics of the auto industry. That is why so many names have vanished many not even GM name.
