Hello everyone. I've been thinking about painting my 87 Fiero 2m4 for a while now. The paint on it right now is very rough and needs to be redone. How much primer/paint will I need to cover the entire car?

It all depends on how thick you apply the paint and primer. Paint is always thinned, and hardener added. Probably half gallon will do the job.

So 2 quarts primer and 2 quarts base color? Or 1 quart of each?[This message has been edited by 87FieroEnthusiast (edited 09-16-2025).]

1/2 gallon of each should do it plus hardener and a bit of thinner, . If you add silver for the ground effects that would add more paint. Follow the mixing directions carefully and thin for the best spray pattern when needed. ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. Depends on how well you paint.
Do overs?
Clear too.[This message has been edited by hyperv6 (edited 09-18-2025).]

You probably know more about painting than I do, but just in case this might help... I thought this video was pretty interesting:

Today's paints are so good that you can get an outstanding shine with single stage paint. Base coat /clear coat may shine better but its expensive to do and requires more work.. A good paint job is heavily dependent on the prep work. ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. I have been looking into different paints. I came across a color shifting paint from Lime Line I like the look of. It is a urethane paint that is recommended for use on metal surfaces (unless primer meant for plastic is used). Can I use urethane paint to paint the car? For this paint, I would need to do a clear coat as well.
Going back to my first post, would I need a gallon of 1:1 pre-thinned base coat to cover the entire car (2 quarts base and 2 quarts thinner), or only 2 quarts of 1:1 pre-thinned base coat?[This message has been edited by 87FieroEnthusiast (edited 09-29-2025).]
