Lloyd mat question- interference with gas pedal (Page 1/1)

Hello folks

Had a mishap with my car. My aftermarket floor mat has been bunching up (without my knowledge)... recently as I was shifting gears, it got trapped between my foot and the gas pedal and basically floored the gas pedal without me touching the pedal. Engine red lined.. car fishtailed.. ended up putting the car into a ditch. Not a lot of damage, but still really **** situation and a big ticket from the cops

I know the factory mats had velcro on the bottom to prevent them from moving around

Have you had similar issues with Lloyd mats or other aftermarket mats? It was really dangerous, and I am wondering how you guys keep the mats from moving or getting stuck by your pedals

I had the EXACT same situation with my 1985 Fiero GT 4-Speed... I pushed down the gas, it got stuck on the floor mat... I couldn't stop it... passed a car, and then immediately took it out of gear and it red-lined 3 times (bounced off the rev-limiter) and I turned the key off and pulled over.

It's a problem that's way more common than people let on... not specifically Fieros, but in older cars, and there have been lots of lawsuits.

The NTSHA (which Canada also collaborates with so their regulations are ~99% the same) has several regulations that require floor mat fasteners or velcro specifically for this purpose. The original problem stemmed from the Audis back in the early 1980s (like 1981-1982) and almost put Audi of North America out of business. I'm not necessarily an Audi afficionado... but it was the usual crap that we dealt with as Fiero owners. The media blew it out of proportion, and even rigged up a car to accidentally accelerate for a news report... the usual stuff. It turned out to be a combination of people mistaking the small brake pedal for the gas pedal, and conversely... the gas pedal getting stuck on the floor mat.

Anyway... if your floor mat doesn't have velcro, or gromits... you've got to add them. Do a search for "Floor Mat Grommet Kit" on Amazon, etc.

Quick question though... did you tell the police that it was by accident, and that your gas pedal got stuck? Did they not give you the benefit of the doubt? That seems really dick for them to cite you when it was clearly an accident and no one else was affected.

I told them what happened but was given a nasty ticket anyway.

Has this happened to anyone else?

My Llyod mats came with grommets and screw in fasteners for the drivers side (screws into the factory carpet), it works just fine, but I also don't "slide around" on the carpet or seats, any time I need to move my feet, I lift them off the floor and then put them where I need them, I have one spot for my heel between the gas and brake, and it's indented enough that nothing moves.

Common problem. I put a strip of Velcro on the bottom of the carpet. Works pretty well but on new cars the mats have reinforced holding holes with hooks.

I run matless in my car.

If I ran floor mats, I would bolt/rivet/clamp the mat to some thin metal brackets and bolt the brackets to the front seat bolts.

My Loyds in the Vette had the factory hole for the hook.

As for the Fiero if they did not supply the hook just sew some velco on the back. Don't make this more complicated than it really is.

People drove for decades with matts and managed with out a hook and velcro. You just needs to have some awareness.
