Ok, what's the final answer on this? (Page 1/2)

I've seen multiple Iron Dukes... the older ones (85-86) that have the "Tech-IV" sticker on them. But I was always told (and led to believe) that the Tech-IV was the name given to the Iron Duke in 1987+ ... because of DIS ignition.

So what's the story? Here's an example of one from eBay:

Note: this is the older 85-86 Iron Duke air cleaner... not the wider one from 87-88.

I thought the name came about when they equipped that engine with TBI..... Which was somewhat earlier than DIS. All 4-cylinder Fieros were TBI but the early ones had distributors.

Yeah. It happened about the time they switched from carbs to TBI.
Car and Driver even called it the "Low Tech IV". (You know how they get.)

I heard that too... but, I don't ever remember seeing the Tech-IV sticker on MOST 4 cyl Fieros?

I know for a fact that I've seen it on a couple, but never on an 84. I know for sure of course, that all 87-88s had it on there. If I look up any 84-86 Fieros on eBay, I don't see any with the Tech-IV logo on it.

I have the sticker... just not sure if it's appropriate for my daughter's 85.

So, no 84s I've seen anywhere have it. This is a 23k all original Fiero from Gateway Classics (I think):

And here's a fairly low mileage 88 Fiero (73k original miles) also from eBay:

I need to find some 85s, and some 86s... not finding them. Haha...

Ok, some search results...

1985 - I could not find a single stock 1985 Fiero 2m4 that had the Tech-IV sticker on the air cleaner.
1986 - All of the stock 1986 Fiero 2m4 engines I saw had Tech-IV stickers on the air cleaner.

So, it seems the first time it showed up on the Fiero, was in 1986. Only real difference from 1985 to 1986 on the Duke was the introduction of the V5 compressor... and of course, ALL engines had roller lifters (early 1985s still had flat tappets).

That is the extra 5hp sticker, .

My 84 definitely doesn't and never had the Tech 4 sticker

This is what I'm hoping. It's reflective, so it helps shield heat from the cold air coming in through the intake, which results in more horsepower and performance.

Consider also all the numerous other GM vehicles that used that same engine. The Chevy Celebrity for example.... Like you did, I looked online for pics and couldn't find any "Tech 4" decal pics prior to 1986 on a Celebrity. Same with Iron Duke Grand Ams. I tend to think the simplest explanation is that was when GM started using the Tech 4 name, and that it isn't necessarily tied to any actual advancements.

But who knows. GM didn't introduce new technology across all model lines at the same time. Did the Iron Duke become DIS in 1986 in other, higher-selling models? I don't think it did.... But it's something to look at.
