Both the Fiero and the Pinto have better than average Fire safety records- That is a truth that does not sell newspapers.
The Fiero did have problems, but if you kept your oil level up, and didn't drive around clover-leafs at max "G"s you would be fine. GM took care of all the 5000 Fieros that had the combination of mistakes that could lead to fires. And all of the fires these articles are talking about happened on 1984 Fieros- from 85 on the problems were corrected and/or eliminated.
I have a whole list of things labeled "Common Knowledge ain't right all the time"....I hear 2-4 people discussing something they "Know" is the truth and then I tell them they are wrong. Case in Point; "American quality sucks compared to Japanese quality....It's in their culture to make things well!" So I say, look up something called the "Deming Prize".....
If I am feeling especially "Smart-azz-y" I tell them that Deming was from the Prefecture of Iowa.......(Prefecture is what the Japanese call their states)
Now, if I wanted to roast marshmallows....should I go buy a Lambo...?

I remember when Car & Driver described Audi buying Lamborghini as "Now you can turn on the radio without the expectation that your car will catch fire." =))
As for media opines on automotive deathtraps, let's not forget the Corvair.

My 1988 Mera may have been another one to add to the list. Had the front end up to replace the PS rack (car has N* motor) and when running the car to test for leaks in the rack, there was gas pouring off the back of the tank onto the floor. Luckily nothing happened, but dropped the tank to find out the vent hose was not connected. The full tank of gas and front end so high up allowed gas to flow out the vent.

Where did the writer get the idea that "Pontiac reduced the size of the oil pan from 4 quarts to 3 quarts"?
The writer also neglects to mention that the issue was on 1984 models; only available with 2.5L 4 cylinder motors...
The 3 quart capacity was an error printed in the owner's manual; stick-on label corrections (that I applied to my copy) were part of a recall.
"Common knowledge" is so frequently inaccurate and/or incomplete...

I catch hell in the Bay area over my Fiero.....Everyone "Knows" that they all caught fire and they are "The WORST car ever made- ZERO quality!!! What a pile o' junk!"
I like to point out to them Look at my 30+ year old Fiero and look at your Tonda....(Which looks worse than my Daily driver Fiero)..."What will your Tonda look like in 20-30 more years?"
It's kind of like trying to explain to buzz-bomb engine guys that TORQUE and power-band WIDTH can make up for lower peak HP....
Dr. Extreme...Man, that is just scary as hell! I thought I had it bad when my headlight motor kept running and was up to 160* before I could disconnect it!
And the Corvair was not really killed by the media- They helped but it was mainly Ralphy Nadir......A guy who knew NOTHING about cars, and NEVER had a driver's license or had ever even driven a car (He did hitchhike across the country tho....so THAT makes him an expert) An early (Swing-axle) Corvair was tested by the NHTSA in 1973 and they stated it "Handled better than the '73 cars" they were testing then....
People will believe BS if you tell them "We are telling you the truth and anyone who says otherwise is LYING!!!!!!"[This message has been edited by cvxjet (edited 01-31-2021).]

The media as a whole has trouble reporting the truth anymore on many things.
Then the web backs it up with a quote from a late night comic.
The web is so full of click bait and half truths and they are the only thing burning Fiero’s.

My common droll response:
"Yes, they ALL catch fire. When we have a show that's why we take out chairs and sit down so we can wait for one of our Fieros to burst into flame. That person gets the special trophy."

Wkdfiero- That is hilarious!
Another response for Fiero "Fire".....enthusiasts....Is to tell them, "Only the GREEN Fiero's caught fire!" and when they doubt you, you then ask them, "Have you ever SEEN a green Fiero? NO! Because they all burned up!"
Counter Mis-information with.....MORE mis-information!
