Anyone ever rebuild their Fiero M/C? (Page 1/1)

My master cylinder in my 85 GT is leaking badly from the back of the bore. Anyways, I found a new m/c very cheap at Rockauto so that’s the route I will be taking this time around. However, before I found one that was quite inexpensive, I was toying with the idea of buying a rebuild kit. I saw a Raybestos one on Rockauto for $14 bucks and was contemplating going that route but I am not sure how tricky it would be? One unknown of course is if the bore is bad. (Then we’re talking honing)

Anyone ever rebuild their own?
How did it work out or was it a hassle?

I suspect you're referring to the brake master cylinder, rather than the clutch master cylinder... but perhaps you should specify.

I read one of the members on here did a rebuild. He said it took about 30 minutes and just make sure the seals are installed with their lips facing in the right direction.

Some of the so called "rebuilt" master cylinders that I've installed have provided unsatisfactory performance. This is because Master Cylinders have aluminum bores that after hundreds of thousands of cycles wear and enlarge. Cylinder wear makes it harder for the new piston seals to work effectively. The check valves can also leak The Fiero units are now over 30 years old and buying new should be the best option. I recent purchased an AC Delco Master Cylinder. It was about $100 but it was stamped Made in the USA. If bled correctly (both bench and Installed) they will work fine and your braking will improve. IMO, brakes are not an item that you want to cheap out on. Whats your life worth?

While "they" make "Rebuilt" kits for Aluminum MC, Brake and Clutch for many, these are Not recommended for Several reasons.
Some Examples:
DIY and Most "Pro's" can't Hone a Al body w/o big problems.
Many Al bores have problems too and often big holes to hone out.
Many Al MC are anodize inside to prevent "rot" and honing will remove it.
Honing "Stones" can embed Stone "dust" in the Aluminum that eats the seals.

So You might get lucky and seems to work but often will fail again and likely soon and on a highway etc leaving w/ complete brake failure at The worse time possible.
If you hurt or kill someone when that happening, victims or estate can and often will sue and you saying rebuilt MC, brake mod's, etc then expect to lose and go bankrupt in many places.

Even w/ Iron Brake MC for many vehicles often have problems when rebuilding or buy a rebuilt unit.
