I am looking at buying a 86 GT and the owner says that the Fiero has never been repainted. Have I made a mistake in decoding the Service Parts Identification Label and the meaning of 18L and 16U Is there a RPO that indicates special order paint? Can there be yellow over spray from the factory?

That has definitely been resprayed. Fiero body panels were painted prior to assembly on the space frame, the only overspray that's factory was around the headlight door openings. [This message has been edited by jonrev (edited 08-03-2020).]

no expert here but it appears to be resprayed IMO [This message has been edited by nosaint (edited 08-03-2020).]

The paint code is WA9004 which means this car was originally "Silver Metallic"
Good looking car, but if the seller is lying about the paint, what else are they lying about.[This message has been edited by Thunderstruck GT (edited 08-03-2020).]

On the factory blue 85 that Paul McKibben and I found, it had a color override notation on the SPID label. This car doesn't have that, but I guess it could still be a factory paint job. Look through the front cowling mesh and see if you can see the color on the piece of the roof that rests below the windshield. A good repaint might still have never have touched that and if it was a silver car it might still show that there. I'm with the others about the overspray, but check that part under the cowling mesh and let us know!
Good Luck!
Edited for one more thought. The mirrors have been painted the body color and on the blue 85 the mirrors were stock black. I'd take the yellow mirrors as one more sign of an overall non-factory repaint.[This message has been edited by 88 Database Guy (edited 08-03-2020).]

I agree. IIRC the aero rocker kits on '86 GT were contrasting colours to the body colour. If correct, having the same colour all over would tend to make me believe it's been resprayed. A panel-off respray is pricey and labour intensive. No guarantee but you could try to remove a fender bolt under the hood and see if it's been painted panel-off or panel-on. You could also try removing the plastic covers in the door sill over the rivets holding the rocker panel on. These pop off if you do it carefully. You might get a good indication of what the aero molding colour was originally.------------------ Mike in Sydney

Silver Metallic paint code, overspray where there shouldn't be any overspray, mirrors and aero body effects painted too.... I don't think there's any doubt. It's a repaint.

Yep, that's the factory paint. The car was also owned by Jon Voight. [This message has been edited by RWDPLZ (edited 08-03-2020).]
