A local salvage yard has a 2.5L I4 from a 2012 Mazda6, I am wondering about the feasibility and/or practicality of doing a swap with this engine. I have a 1988 with the factory I4 and 5 speed.

That would be a complete one-off swap, so lots of engineering, metal fabrication, wiring, and code cracking of the ecm would be needed.
Just about anything is possible with the right skills and enough time and money...

How would that be better than doing a turbo ecotec swap, which has been documented and some support is available in terms of previous builds, parts, etc?

Probably a lot cheaper than the LSJ with the exception of custom axles. But the only way to do a swap fairly easily would be to get everything off the donor car that you need to run the engine and transaxle.
Entire car wiring harness, steering column with ignition keys,ECM, BCM ,fuel pump and sending unit, gauge cluster and fuel lines. You want the engine and transaxle still bolted together with mounts on. I found a wrecker that was willing to package up most of these things for 1000.00 for my ecotec 2.2 swap.
LSJ motors still go for a premium around here any ways. If I was going to swap in a Mazda powertrain, it would be a Speed 3. You can find them cheap because in Ontario the salt rusts the snot out of them. Buy the whole car and a good welder.
