Two tone paint question (Page 1/1)

Here's a quick paint question...

I have a fiberglass body panel that is going to require a two tone paint job. The main paint will be gloss white and an inset portion will be satin black. In a perfect world, the inset piece would be removed and the two parts painted separately. But, of course, the panel is made as a single fiberglass piece.

What is the best way to paint this, since I don't believe I can use the same clear coat and achieve a gloss white and a satin black?

Paint the entire panel white and clear coat it with gloss clear. Then, mask the part you want to remain white with fine-line automotive tape and automotive masking paper (not newspaper!). Scuff the section you want to paint matte with 400 wet or dry sandpaper and apply colour. Then apply matte clear coat, if desired. That's how I'd do it.

Thanks, Mike.

I was thinking of using single stage paint for the satin black. I'm mostly worried about the interface where the black is on top of the white's clear coat.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you scuff the surface really well and the paint's from the same manufacturer so there isn't any reaction. 400-grit wet or dry should knock off the orange peel and give you a good surface to work with.
