| 88 Wheel/Tire combo pictures - offset, etc (Page 1/1) |

I am getting ready to look for some wheels for the 88 Coupe for my girlfriend. I would like to see some wheel combos, with size, offset and tire size. Also ones that remain very flush with the car primarily. This car has Coilovers in the rear so rear tire size is flexible.
My ideal combos are:
255 or 265 on a 17" or 18" rim for the rear (265/255 /35 series)
215 on a 17" rim for the front (215/45/17)
I am not sure on exact offset's honestly. I can't remember what mine are on my 88. Is there a way to look at the wheel anywhere to get the offset information. Of course my Formula is 17's all around but it has been 18 years since I have had these wheels.

My 1985 SE V6 has 16 x 7 - 38 mm offset wheels (VOXX Monzas- no longer avail) The tires are 205/55 and 225/55...These sizes were used on a number of popular cars so they are readily available from many manufacturers and different styles/performance ratings- I prefer General G-Max AS-05s because they are A) Highly rated, B) All season, and C) Lighter than most other brands.
Light weight will make a difference in the feel and performance of the car. I switched from some 15 x 7 Eagle-Racing wheels and BFG tires in 2007 and lost 3 lbs of each back wheel and 6 lbs of each front wheel...The difference in feel was impressive......Performance gain can be stated as; 40 lbs off of wheel/tire package equals 200 lbs off of vehicle weight. Think about this; My Fiero performs well with just me, but my friend who weighs 190 gets in and the car really loses it's edge.

Top are American Racing 42mm offset 16x7 with 205/55/16 Front and 245/50/16 Rear.
Bottom are Monarch 35mm offset 18x8 front and 18x9 rear. 225/40/18 front and 275/35/18 rear.

Do the front's stick out at all? And do you have any clearance issues with the 275's in the rear? Any pictures of the rear or front angles to show how they tuck in?

Here are mine.
Fronts 17 x 7 40mm offset 225/45-17 tires
Rears 18 x 7.5 45 mm offset 235/40-18
45mm is a little much for the rear so I used 10mm spacer rings with built in hub centric
and 10mm longer Dorman studs which brought it to close to stock 35mm.
It`s becoming kind of hard to get different offsets.

Can you go 285 on the rear of an 88 with coilovers and it clear? This car has coilovers.

The Wheels do stick out a bit, maybe up to an inch. Not far enough where it looks bad or needs a wide body, but definitely not flush either. The 275 does not seem to be rubbing anywhere and appears to have room to fit 285s

The 42mm were flush, even a bit under in the back with stock width tires. The wider tires made it more flush in the rear too.
38-40mm would probably be best if you don't want anything sticking past the fender.[This message has been edited by liv4God (edited 03-16-2020).]

My car is an 88. It has my lateral link relocation brackets which moved the trailing link inboard 3/8" at the knuckle. It also has the top of the struts moved inboard 1" from the 88 location. Both of these give me slightly more clearance than the average 88.
I can barely get my pinky between the trailing link and the tire and full effort turns cause the side wall to rub slightly:
The clearance to the coilovers is better and they have never rubbed.
With the combination of pulling the top of the strut inboard and flipping the strut hat to allow more suspension travel in compression, the top of the tire barely rubs the inner wheel well liner at full compression.
