Resourcing a LS4/F40 project (Page 1/1)

Ok, so first off, thank you for all the knowledge and inspiration I've gleaned as a non-member. And then thanks in advance for what I am certain will be an exciting relationship based on all things Fiero in the future.

Now that's out of the way.

I have an opportunity to grab a new MU9 F40 for acceptable money and I've got a line on a LS4/4T65E-HD pulled from a Grand Prix with 10 (ten) miles on the clock about 13 years ago and stuffed in a garage on a pallet under shrink wrap with all the shifter, steering wheel, k-frame, and pedal bits. Seller says he paid 3500 for it all way back when but is being cute about what offers make sense.

Here's the challenge. I have very little clue what to offer on the LS4/etc as all my planning was laid around a rebuild and cams and intake and...and...

Is there any reasonable market for the tranny? I don't think I need any of the TAPShift parts etc right? It's too good just scrap and I am not looking to take up automatic shifting anytime soon.

Anyone got a fair market figure for this sort of thing? Not a lot of no mileage drivelines out there.

Yes, people will buy the transmission, but they are made of glass in stock form and a rebuild is 1800.

I sold my 18k mile trans for $650 back in 2012. I have two higher mileage ones on the shelf, but haven't tried to sell them.

I don't believe the MU9 F40 bolts to the LS4. You want the MT2 from a 2006/2007 G6.

Well shoot. You would know best on that.

Well, as far as I can tell I have the MU9, brand new that was originally destined for a 3800/F40 project. Got the 6 speed shifter, cables, pedals, etc. too.

Got a Spec 3+ Clutch in the deal as well but it was meant for the 3800/F40 setup. If the LS4 can't be made to bolt up to the F40 then I suppose an L67 V6 is in my future. Or I'll have a real nice kit to resell.

Guy with the LS4 isn't really trying too hard to sell it. I guess 13 years of dust is real valuable.

So I have read as much as I could handle on my phone and it seems like there is some discourse on whether or not the M6 or 7 degree bellhousing is in play here.

I plead ignorance in either case.

The casting is marked 0822680 and FGP 55352843. Transaxle proper has a barcode and R--05061798G4 on it. It has a sticker with that number as well as 61122915061798 on it.

I'm thinking the R code is a GM part number but cannot seem to find it.

The 61122xxxx number is probably a stock code used by the retailer, right?

Is there a surefire ID method other than plain old know how?

Looks like the MU9 was offered in the ecotec and metric bolt patterns...

Did you ever have it bolted up to the 3800? If you did, then it will bolt to the LS4. If not, then check the bellhousing pattern. It need to look like this.

If it looks like this, it is the wrong one:

It's the top one! Phew. Had me worried there for a bit.

So here's a wrinkle. I may be adopting another '88 (White GT automatic) real soon and it will need a cleanish motor. I'm thinking I'll swap the two 2.8s and scrap the bad one. That'll leave the 282 from Meredith on a pallet. Clutch is slowly dying on Meredith in any case and I was planning the engine swap as a "while I'm in there" kind of thing.

I've got the Spec 3+ clutch meant for a Camaro 3800 V6/F40 on hand as is. In the interest of time and economy do I just find a L32/L67 or the like and drop it in rather than suffer the slings and arrows of the LS4?

Comparatively easier process right?
