New owner - your advice please (Page 1/1)

Hello everyone!
I just purchased an '85 GT 4 speed, 24k original miles and bone stock! I am super excited to learn and enjoy this car, but before I do that, I am looking for some feedback on what maintenance and service I should complete to protect this car. Some notes:
24,000 original, garaged miles
less than 1000 miles driven in last 3 years
tires replaced within the last 5 years

I am most concerned with what may be 'too original'...what should I do NOW in order to enjoy many future weekend drives & car shows? I know this is a first year model, so I want to make sure it lasts forever.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

40,000 original miles, all original except for plugs, oil, oil filter, battery, brake pads and tires which were replaced in 1992 with original Goodyears. ZERO issues. Just took it on a 300 mile round trip at highway speeds to a car show. Again, ZERO issues.

My advice, look it over real good and don't have people try and sell you things you don't need just because they "claim" you do.

Inspect rubber hoses for cracking - (coolant, vacuum, brakes)
Bleed brakes to freshen the fluid.
Change coolant.
Change oil and filter.
Service brake caliper sliders and check pads.
Check air filter and HVAC fan for critter nests.
Check HVAC fan resistor pack for critter nest.
Repack front wheel bearings.
Drive short trips around your area to find hidden problems and gain confidence in the car.
Keep a spare Ignition Control Module and tools to change it in the car.
Check and clean grounds throughout the car.

Awesome! This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

It`s actually a second year model and the only GT notchback.

Welcome from Staunton - home to at least 2 85GTs in our garage :-) (And 3 other Fieros!)

I have bought many low mileage cars over the years and the 1st thing I always do is change out the brake fluid in the brake lines (and master) and clutch (master and slave) lines

Re Ignition Control Module, add tools to change it out. Pretty simple if it dies (if you have the tools!) to do but will leave you dead on the roadside in a heartbeat!

Anything I might say is probably worth what you paid for it, so treat it accordingly!

Congrats on the purchase.
I agree mostly you should do basic mainentance recommended by the manufacturer. Fluids, filters, inspections. Drive short distances from home at speed and in stop and go traffic, etc to make sure all is working as it should.

Yup... ignore miles and check/fix most to all above.

Yes Defiantly Check AC/Heater Box for crap there too.
Pull Blower motor and resistor next to that.
Resistors may have crap or not. When true can burn your car down.
Next Use mirrors/camera to look in and left.
See http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/141959.html
and Search PFF for blower resistor fire in All Active Forums

Repack Front wheel bearing if you want but if done wrong you will have more problems and often fast.
