Car and Driver Fiero Review December 1983 (Page 1/1)

think this is my first original threat though I've been mostly a reader for 5 years.
I recently uploaded this to FB but I wanted it on here for archival purposes, basically so every one out have access to this info forever. I actually finally created a photobucket account so I could do it lol
Hope I got it right!
*Edit* OK after 3 tries I think I did. OK now 4 lol

This is probably my favorite pic from the whole article, really looks like an Italian stiletto.

Some of whay they say is just plain crazy. The Fiero's number one sin is being born fat at a whopping 2,580 Lbs? The Trunk is big enough for a few baseball gloves? Jeez, come on with that BS. But, I've always had this idea in my head about swapping in the engine that Pontiac would have wanted, but I don't have to go on rumors or try to figure it out after reading this!

Nice- but the sad thing is that a few years later, Car & Drivel would burn the Fiero down every chance they got while raving about the MR2...and even putting the FWD CRX above it- They were definitely on the take from Toyota and Honda.

Their mission was to stop the Fiero from competing with the MR2 and CRX...and C&D was very successful.....

(Read the road tests from Motor Trend and R&T of the 1985 GT ("Almost perfect car") and then read their road tests of the 88 Formula ("Much improved in every way! But still no good!") (I wonder how much the 3 US car magazines were paid?)

>>>Sorry about the rant<<<

After this I want to get one for the 88 Fiero too.
TBH I always wondered if it was Chevy these journalists were listening too when they were shitting on the Fiero.

Does the 1984 Fiero really have a 3 turns lock to lock steering rack? If so, what other years and models have this same rack?

I always noted the changes in reviews... Things like...
1984 with Iron Duke - "So fun! Handles like a gocart. Goes where you point it."
1987 with V6 - "Under-powered and still suffers from clunky steering they debuted with..."

Was the Fiero perfect? No... But they make it sound like GM made the car worse over time...

I'm almost entire sure there were two steering racks from 84 to 87; the base model and the rack that accompanied the WS6 suspension package, which was a little quicker. The 88s were different as they had a revised front suspension and the rack didn't include a damper but for that year there were two again, base model and WS6.

Thanks for your reply. As you correctly point out, here were two racks with slightly different ratio's, one for the standard cars (4 turns L to L?) and the GT model (3.6 L to L?) but maybe someone with a 1984 would know if their car has even faster steering? Or did C/D get this wrong?

Cars: 1987 Mera
1985 CRX Si
1987 CRX Dx

I just double-checked my 1985 Fiero SE V6....Steering is 3.1 turns lock-to-lock...I have the WS6 suspension....(I ordered the car in 1985 with that suspension)

The pre-88 Fieros had two ratios, WS6 models had the faster ratio.
The 88 Fieros all used the same ratio. The 88 rack ratio is midway between earlier year fast and slow racks.
IIRC, the fast rack is 3 turns, the slow rack is 3.5 turns, the 88 rack is 3.25 turns.
