Wanna race? (Page 1/2)

NASA has announced a new endurance series called the Team Racing Endurance Challenge (TREC). It is intended to be a low budget series that requires little or no road racing experience. I am interested in putting together a team for this series.

A little bit of background: I have been a member of an endurance racing team for about eleven years, and will likely continue to race with that team.  We have used a Dodge Neon (1st gen) and have had reasonable success over the years in Lemons, Chumpcar and Lucky Dog series.   We even managed an outright overall win at a true 24 hour race at Buttonwillow, as well as a couple wins in seven hour events.   We have generally been able to finish in the top 10% of all competitors, and have had only two DNF races since we started in 2009.

As I mentioned, I will likely continue with the existing team although that team may not be available to compete in every TREC event that may be scheduled for 2020, and thus, may be interested in putting together another team.   For what it is worth, I already have another Neon that is ready to race in substantial part (e.g. stripped out; roll cage installed; racing seat and harness; couple of trick parts; a couple of sets of wheels; etc.). It would need a kill switch, fire extinguisher (or fire suppression system), window and driver’s side net; and perhaps a brake upgrade (relatively cheap for a Neon).   It may also need an onboard camera, and a radio  communication system might be nice.

I also have a couple Fieros that might be good candidates for this series. Both are notchback models (one 88 and one 87) with IMSA style rear spoilers.

I am based in SoCal but am willing to travel as far as Thunderhill (and maybe even as far as Arizona) depending on my available time.  So, if you are interested, let’s talk.  I prefer our initial contact to be by email to shelbydude@gmail.com or text at 818-588-6889.   While the TREC rules do not require a competition license, and apparently no track experience, at least some track experience is preferable, but not necessarily required.  Again, let’s talk.

OK... so it appears that there is little interest, if any, in wheel to wheel competition racing. So, lets try this: I have two Fieros that would be good candidates for track events like HPDE where the participant is only running for practice whether timed or not, or alternatively, a time trial event. One is an 88 coupe and the other is an 87 coupe. Both of these have Kirk Racing roll bars (not a compete roll cage) installed and are generally complete. I have large brake kits for both, but have not yet installed them. For what it is worth, the 87 currently has a H.O Quad4 with 5 speed trans and a RCC bump steer kit. As equipped, the 87 weighs approximately 2150 lbs.

I have multiple sets of wheels that can be used on either one of these. If for HPDE or timed events, I would probably recommend tires with anywhere between 100 and 200 tread rating. Again, if interested, you can send a text to 818-588-6889.

Ditch the bump steer kit, it's worthless.

Appreciate the comment, but it is already in place. Do you have any alternative recommendations?

Lower the car, heavier springs, shocks valved to match springs, heavy sway bars front and rear.
With the car 2" lower than stock and the above mods, the car will not roll enough to exhibit rear toe change.
Unsprung weight will also be greatly reduced on the rear.

Or swap in an 88 rear cradle and suspension.

If i were closer, i would be all over the racing offer.

Again, thanks for the comments. Since I have a complete spare 88 cradle, that may be the best way to go on the 87 coupe.
