It's still a 4t80, but im not sure if he eventually got it figured out or just keeps replacing them. I have a 4t80 on my 3800 turbo, but haven't put it through its paces.

I have a couple 4t80e , one thing is they eat up quiet a bit more power than what the 4t65e does but will take a beating.. I know one has got theirs to work with the stock 3800 pcm , I'd just spend $395 on a controller and be done with it.... I will get around to putting one of mine in a 3800 turbo car at some point http://www.e-transcontrol.com/gm-transmission/

The 4T80 is a strong transmission for sure but the LS4 uses the 4T65eHD and they hold up fine. They can also be built stronger to take up to 1000 HP. Forum member Darkhorizon (Scott) ran a 9.87 1/4 mile time @ 147 MPH with a stock 4T65eHD. Point is that you may not need a 4T80 and the added weight and swap work that it brings. ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. When used alongside the LS4, the 4T65e-hd might as well be made of glass. They break all the time... even when still under warranty. It is pretty common to find a GM rebuilt transmission with the LS4 when you buy a take out. http://www.gmls4.com/index.php/topic,33.0.html
I am 1 for 3 finding a factory rebuilt transmission (although it really is 1 for 2 as my first LS4 only had 18K miles):

You must be right. I've got one from a Buick Riv with 3800sc, too.

I'm going with the ls4 with plans on building it. i don' t want to drop thousands on a trans just to have it break again, That's why i'm asking all the questions.
