My Fiero story begins again after 17 years (Page 1/2)

About 17 years ago I lost my treasured Fiero. I was a kid then who grew up without much, but having an actual sports car (I'll fight anyone who says a Fiero isnt a sports car) made me feel like a million bucks every time I got behind the wheel. Through a series of unfortunate events (yeah, it involved a girl) I lost her never to be seen again. As any true Fiero lover knows, that hurt never really goes away and you will always ache for another. So once again through a series of strange events, I find myself in the position to help heal that ache with the only thing that can help.... A new Fiero.

For the past 3 months I have been scouring the interwebs for a new garage girlfriend and my wife ran across one that happened to be in our state. At first I wasnt sold on the paint job or look because I usually am more of a stock red and understated kind of guy.. however... the more I looked at it, this one grew on me. Anyway, I arranged a meet up to test drive two different Fieros last weekend; the first being a very stock white 87 and the second being this custom 85 with a fast back mod and a very 'Tokyo drift' style paint job. Before I left my wife and kid both informed me i better like "the cool one" so I went with open eyes. The first one, the stock 87 was fun to drive. I have to admit, it was over 17 years since I had sat in a Fiero, so the shock tool a little while to set in. The car was a lot smaller than i remember... or I was a lot bigger (probably both) but as any Fiero, it was fun to drive around. There were a few things that needed fixing and she wanted a bit too much for it, but I still kept an open mind.

On to the next stop "The cool one" as my son called it. Again, I was hesitant because it was an 85 and the odometer read over 175k, but I had spent a few hours talking to the owner about all of the work he did to it. It was this that really drew me to the car. He had rebuilt the thing from the ground up (AND PROVIDED PICTURES!) . I knew any car this old was going to require some TLC, but the drive train in specific is currently a bit outside my skill set, so it was this that was really attractive to me. Add to that the previous 87 was owned by someone who 'always thought Fieros were cute' rather than a true Fiero lover, so the mechanical situation seemed to be better to me by far on the custom 85.

Anyway, the second I sat down in that 85 I had to collect myself to drag the **** eating grin off my face. I knew it the second I sat down, this was the car. So a little business talking and some arrangements later (and the obligatory title shenanigans that come with a lot of older cars) , my Fiero story begins again.

The plan is that over the next 6 years or so my son and I will work on her. He will learn to turn a wrench and in the mean time I will be fixing my Fiero addiction. I've already started my to-do list so here we go....

Meet "Death Punch" . - My son named it after one of his favorite bands

Feels so good to be a Fiero owner again.

Welcome to our obsession! (Or welcome back, as the case may be.)
I hope it's everything you remember it to be.

That's a very cool looking car!

Ty for the kind words. I plan on posting more pictures soon. I have to go through the usual government song and dance about getting plates and all that jazz.. but I do have a few projects lined up that I intend on posting on.

The first one is putting a modern stereo in it. The old one needs to go, so I'm planning on making a custom cover for the center console and doing some handiwork moving things around. This will probably be the first, cause obviously you gotta have tunes, and if it isnt going to be original, then why not go ultra-modern. The interior probably needs the most work of anything as some of the gauges are having issues, the seats need to be redone, and there is a few spots in the dash that need polishing.

Probably the biggest issue that I'm working on though is the AC was removed. I've been researching on youtube and here what, if anything, can be done about that.. so any advice there would be helpful. For now though, I'm just going to revel in being a Fiero owner again

Wow, that’s a seriously deep extractor hood mod.
Interesting wheels. Never seen those on a Fiero. Know what they are from? Kinda look like some wheels I saw on a Ford Fusion.
Would suggest that since it’s an 85 and now has s fastback clip on it, you might as well add the aux gauge pkg so it looks more legit.

The best i can tell, the wheels are from an Alfa Romeo. (Id take credit for that, but someone on a Fiero facebook group I'm a part of pointed it out.) . It does have the GT aux gauges, however the speedo is still the old 85 mph one (and that gauge cluster might have some issues) so in my five year plan.. I'm going to replace most of the dash with a combination of intellitronix gauges and a custom touch screen andriod set up I'm designing for the aux gauge. (again.. this is probably at least a year or two out). Right now I'm working on rebuilding the dash with some custom stuff so I can put in a fancy new head unit and back up camera.
