Reconnected with Fiero's Original Owner Who Departed With Car in 1992 (Page 1/1)

I had a neat experience this morning that I think is worth sharing.

I recently took my 87 GT out of storage after surrendering the plates in 2010. I put it in storage after putting a palsley 58 miles on the odometer in the past year and couldn't justify paying the registration, insurance and safety fees every year. The cost of driving it that year worked out to just a little under $15/ mile.

Fast forward 9 years later, I began to miss the thrill of cruising to the local beaches and driving around town. I made the decision to pull the car out of the mothballs and to gear her up for road duty by installing a new battery and ground cable, replacing the 20 year old racing tires with Firestone Indy 500s, changing the front brake rotors, lines and disks and by flushing out the rust and scale from the old Chevy motor and Archie 4-core radiator that I had installed back in in '96. The work is still in progress but she's running better than the day I mothballed her.

In any event, while emptying out the glove compartment this past week, I stumbled across the owner's manual. The original owner, Donald, had written his name, the date he purchased the car (7/3/87) and the original miles (67) right on the cover. I Googled Donald’s name and Google returned a matching name, address and phone number for him in Pensacola Florida. When I got to work this morning, I called the number and was surprised to actually reach Donald. He told me that he was stationed in Hawaii when he bought the car in 1987 and that he sold it in around 1992. He then moved to the Mainland and while he was in Alabama, purchased an '88 GT with a T-top in 2000 from a lot which he described as a “Fiero Graveyard” (turned out to be Fiero Factory). I think Donald said he ended up selling it or wrecking it and that his children (who were too young at that time to drive) lamented over the loss of his Fiero when they became old enough to drive because they thought it was a neat car. In any event, Donald said that the Fiero Graveyard is in Toney Alabama and it carries hard to find Fiero parts if I ever needed something.

After our conversation, I sent Donald some photos of the car when I bought it in 1992 and some recent photos that I took this past week.

He said the car reminded him of his Sunday morning drives from Honolulu up to the Likelike Highway and over to the Windward side or around Diamond Head.

It was great to hear how after 32 years, Donald’s love for Fieros hadn’t changed. In fact, he said that he was just thinking about buying another one.

That’s a great story! Seeing the before and after of the car is really neat. That’s cool the original owner gets to know the Fiero is still around today.

I have all the paperwork from my original owners, heck, I even drove my their original house in CA. I have been unable to contact them though sadly.
