Welp, it finally happened. My Formula, which I always boasted as running so great, totally shut down on the way to work this morning. There were times before when I was able to nurse her home, but this time I needed to call a tow. ( Fortunately my Progressive Ins. completely took care of the necessity quite promptly ). Looks to me that the fuel pump died. Theres plenty of cranking power, but no sign of starting at all. Are there any tests I can preform before I drop the tank to make sure its the pump ? I've done this job before, so I can tackle it, but I don"t want to have to drop the tank if I don't need to. Its dark now so tomorrow I'll try squirting some fuel into the intake to see if she'll start. Besides that, anything other tests?

There are a couple of obvious things to check for. Can you hear the fuel pump prime for a couple of seconds? Does fuel spray out when you release the Schrader valve on the fuel rail?

I feel your pain. If the fuel delivery system is ok, try testing the pick-up coil. You might also try a known good ICM.
This happened for me a few times over a couple of years before the culprit was definitively identified.

The cause: intermittent bad solder joints on the pick-up coil.

I bought two brands to see if they looked like they could be from the same manufacturer; the plastic molded parts looked identical.

I also had a 2.5L quit twice in three years without any warning while driving. Had fuel & spark. Tried a spare ECM each time & it started right up.

Fuel or ignition...
Does the tach move when cranking? If it does, look more closely at fuel system.
If not, it's usually the ICM. But you can test pickup coil and coil too.
