Starting my first teardown of my '88 (Page 1/1)
ZCR1 DEC 18, 10:16 PM
Well, I felt the clutch starting to slip, then my coolant crossover tube sprung a leak... So, I might as well tear it apart and clean, replace, restore whatever I can.
I was just going to drop the engine with the cradle like everyone else, which makes sense, but I decided I had the time and like to try things of difficulty just for fun! I pulled the engine through the top with the car in the air; it was fun, I learned a lot and wont do it that way again...

It looks like you posted pics, but they don't seem to be accessible...
When I posted this reply, the pics showed up. Hmmm....
Good luck with your project!

I think we've all been there at some point.

Did it make a "FOOP!" sound when it popped out through the top?

Good luck with your project.

Edit - If you decide to separate the struts from the cradle before reinstalling, leave the struts and the knuckles bolted together.
Instead, remove the bolts from the trailing links and the long bolt from the lateral/toe links from the bottom of the knuckles. (If you then remove the large axle nuts, the struts and knuckles will come off as a very large assembly.)
Your alignment will be *very close* if not spot-on, when you screw everything back together.

"Did it make a "FOOP!" sound". Ha, no, but I almost gave up trying to get it out that way. If it weren't for my trans mounts being pretty worn out, I likely would have; I ratchet strapped to top of the bellhousing to the knuckle which gave me enough clearance to tilt the engine at a pretty extreme angle to get up around the battery tray.

Thanks for the alignment tip, but I'll be replacing the struts and stripping/painting the knuckles and cradle. I plan on just trailering it to an alignment shop when I get it back together.
