Ideas for a Formula? (Page 1/1)

Hello all! Well, I'm finally getting myself back into Fieros after about 20+ years. I'm picking up an 88 Formula this weekend. I'll post pics once I get it home. It's faded red with beechwood interior and an automatic. Oh yeah, it's a T-top!

I'm looking for ideas for mods after I get it all mechanically sorted and reliable. I will probably do a hood vent and Mustang-style scoop on the decklid. The current wing has a bow in it and I'd like to replace it with an IMSA-style wrap-around or something similar. Also looking for side vents. Current resources or suggestions appreciated!

I'd really like to do something with the nose to update it, but haven't seen anything so far I really like. I looked at every page in the Photoshop thread but the predominance of those are GTs and SE's with the ground effects panels (or bumper pads) and just don't flow well into a car without them. Any ideas? I'm not adverse to doing a bit of cutting and fiberglassing.

Also need some advice on wheels and tires. I do not plan on lowering the car as it's hard enough for me to get in and out (BTW - this is to be a weekend car so that's not a huge issue, LOL). I'd like to go 17" or 18". What widths and offsets do I need to look at? I know the 88s have special needs when it comes to the fronts. Would like to go as wide as I can without going to coilovers and not stick out beyond the fenders too much.

The 2.8 runs fine for now and I may consider a 3.4 in the future.

All answers are greatly appreciated!!

Wheels... If you want to go staggered (as the original wheels are) do a 17x8, 35mm offset in the rear, with 235/45s. Do a 17x7 38-48mm offset in the front, with 215/45s.
That combination will work with stock or lowered suspension. (By the way... if you lower the front just a bit, it will give the illusion of tucking the fronts under the car a bit. The 88 front seems to sit higher than the rear, anyway.)
If you're looking for a way to search for wheels, search for VW New Beetle for the rears, and Subaru Impreza for the fronts. That way you'll have the best chance of finding wheels with the best offset.
The trick will be finding wheels of the same style, in both offsets.
If you don't want to stagger them, look up TopNotch on this forum. His yellow car is an 88, and his wheels are the same front to rear, and they look great.

I have a 1985 SE V6 that I have modified; 86-88 GT rear quarters, but without the ground effects, stock SE rear bumper and 87-88 base car nose.......One of the mods I wanted to do...But probably will not, was to take the rub strip and curve it down in the middle of the front facia, coming to a point, with a G6 trunk Arrowhead emblem in the "V"....I have a photo I modified, but cannot post images here...I could email it to you.....

Hey Hal, Great news on getting back into Fieros ! one of mine is a Formula too, so heres what I've done to it. First off, I had the 2,8 completely rebuilt using the Fiero Stores Hi-per engine kit. that along with installing true axle bearings, and honing out the exhaust manifolds allow me to effortly cruise at 100 mph. ( I don't usually do that, but the engine mods allow me to easily ) I have Good Year Performance Touring tires on stock rims to keep me grounded. Poly busings are all around too. I replace all bolts with stainless steel for no future rust issues there.

I also have the car totally scopped out, with functional side and front hood scoops. This has vastly improved the running temp of the car. And with the southern heat of Georgia, that in itself is a big improvement.
The entire undercarriage has been coated with POR-15, the best rust prevenative I feel there is on the market.
A good sound system is a must to, if you ask me. Cool tunes increase performance, at least in my car it does : )
I always use Castrol oil and run Shell mid grade. I run my car hard as I can a lot, and she always comes back for more.
I'm sure your gonna get all kinds of great ideas, so personalize and upgrade your Formula to your likeing, drive safe, and enjoy the ride.

I haven't done any cosmetic work on my '88 Formula as it's in excellent condition with only 57K miles.

I concentrated on mechanical improvements, mostly the engine, which is documented here:
