What 88 specific parts are no longer available? (Page 1/3)
smartaxel OCT 14, 09:25 PM
Our Fiero club was having a discussion today about pre-87 versus 88. The topic of parts availability came up and we wanted to document a few things. Can you all help with listing what 88 specific parts are no longer available? Are there parts that someone buying an 88 may need to keep an eye out for?

I have been out of the Fiero game for a bit, and just picked up an 88, so really this will help me as well in case there are parts I need to look out for too.

Well lets see how good the old brain works. It has been a while since I had an 88. I drove the 88 for 12 years- year round and put 100,000 miles on it. When I bought it, it had 87,000 on it. It was replaced with an 87. Front hubs/wheel bearings. I dont think you can get them. Rodney did them for a while but not sure if he still does. The parking brake cables are different, last time i tried to get them from AC/Delco several were not available. I used to have a couple, but not sure if I still do. Steering racks, cores were hard to get for rebuilds. Brakes are completely different. Seems like the rear calipers(rebuilts) were hard to get because of the lack of cores. Rear splash shields. Seems Rodney stopped making them. His were correct, the ones I got from Fiero Store where not correct and I had to make lots of "adjustments". Seems like some parts for the 2.5 but I dont recall. Sorry Smartaxle that's about all this old brain can remember. LOL I have a set of fairly nice front 88 hubs that I am keeping. Stored up in the garage. Oh brake parts like pins and the tiny springs to keep the pads on used to be hard to get. I have kept a few. I mentioned brakes. Standard brakes... the slider pins are different than 84-87 brakes and sliders. I got to the point I could get the sliders out and get them smooth and back on and working in a decent time. Oh I almost forgot. I was on a mission to find better slider boots. The ones I got from the Fiero Store were not the same. As in the size was incorrect. In my estimation They were bad. They may be different now but back about 5 years ago when I had an 88 they were NO GOOD. AS in the Fiero Store boots were not the same as the factory boots. I have pictures stored that I took comparing them. I did find a source in China, but I would have had to buy thousands of them and at the time I think I was unemployed or auto sales were bad. So I learned to save good boots when ever I ran across them. Read the factory service manual for installing these little buggers. It seems their method worked the best most of the time. LOL I use to buy new HD(several grades better than standard) Cavalier rear rotors and keep them handy. They were a tiny bit larger( a fraction) but worked perfectly and they were cheaper than "88 Fiero". I used them on the rear for standard 88 Fiero brakes for many years and many many miles. Sorry I dont remember if they worked on the front or not. Seems like they did but.. I dont recall. Well this has been good. I got the old brain working. LOL

What about the gas tank? I thought that the 88 had a slightly larger tank. Is this correct ?

Thanks everyone..

Gas tanks for 87 and up were larger with the sep. expansion tank. I see rodney has 88 bushings and wheel bearings. Some calipers I still see avail, and FS has 88 suspention parts. I wonder if there are any parts that are truly not avail?

Alternator heat shield is 88 only.
Also, there must be some Formula parts that are 88 only like the lower door Formula decal.
Thanks, Kit

I'm not sure if Rodney is still doing the wheel bearings?

Get you a parts car, cheap, peel off all the stuff people mention on here you should put away. It's a lot cheaper then buying each piece individually, here is a link to theprezzz (wisconsin fiero fanatics president) that he just listed...
