88 database guy (Page 37/75)

What I'd like to do is create a very simple web app to get started. The app would primarily function to enable users to view data and add data. The "adds" would be moderated by a select few members to ensure the information is good.

These are the fields I think I would start with for the Fiero table.

I suppose we could include the roof type in options? I usually round the mileage down if the 4th digit in the odometer is under 5, or I round it up if it is.

Sundowner; What would your app do?

Could I ask it questions like:

How many cars have been junked?
How many cars are GTs?
What percent of cars have been reported?
How many are now kit rebodys?
How many cars are 5 speeds?

Who would be the host?
Dburger JUL 01, 02:06 PM
No real way to tell if the salvage vehicles have been junked. Adding to that, it would be cool if we could see how many of each body style are registered, and how many of each transmission type. I'm still willing to register other years as well.

Sure we could ask it those questions, but it would still depend on the number of vehicles that have been recorded into the database.

Some assumptions would have to be made in order to garner usable statistics.

For instance, if you want to know the number of Formulas that are registered and have their original 2.8 in them... You'd use the existing records as a sample of the whole.

If the database contains 650 Formulas and we assume this is a random sample of the 5484 Formulas that were originally built, and 200 (about 30%) are registered and of those 100 are motor swapped, then we can assume approx 15% of the 5484 Formulas that were built are registered and original for a total of about 822 cars. (These are just made up figures)

Of course you know what they say about assumptions... It comes down to where you guys are getting most of the information from.

I think this would be a fun app to build guys... I wouldn't have the time to enter in all the data however so I'd be looking for help. In order to not waste anybody's time I'd say give me a little time to build the basic framework and then we can look into moving all the information over from here on the forums into the application database. Proof of concept before anything.

I have supported and helped John along the way in his efforts and in return he has help me with any little data he might get for my 1988 Fiero t top cars (that I have been collecting since 1991). I hope if you take on this project you continue to add the "ROOF TYPE" in this app it is very important for the history of the car and options out there on all 88 Fieros.

There's no need for a Roof Type field. Sunroof and T-tops would be selectable options that could be attributed to the record.

I think a really good feature of the app would be to hard code in a VIN decoder so that original car information could be displayed next to the most currently known configuration of the car.

Perhaps, also, the ability for site members to assume ownership of their car records and add additional details and notes.
