Got those same grills. I used a small artist brush to repaint them flat black.
The bottom area on my car is painted black, no sticker.
Here's a pic of the "plush" carpeting. You can see where its thick against the console area and the driver's seat.

This is one of those cases where it looks better in the pic than in person. Its not that its "bad," per se, but just dated. But hey, its 21 years old, so its part of the history of the car.
I did a quick search of auto upholstery shops near Capac, MI. Most of them were not in business during the Fiero regime....except one:
Auburn Auto Trim and Sales 3589 Van Dyke Road Almont, MI 48003
Web says that this place has been around since 1958. Looks like only about 8 miles away from Capac. I may contact them. Tom

Well, Project Shift Bezel is completed. I went from this with the cig burn:

(Note how you can't see clearly what gear you're in.)
to this:

and here's what it looks like with the ash tray doors closed:

And surprisingly, the light still shows through the shift tab that I re-painted red. I had thought that it would be too opaque.
Low-cost resto project, I got the used 88 bezel for $20.00. The rest I had on hand, and it was just some time involved.

I think Dano is referring to this area. Mine are definitely smooth and painted.
