DAB has been mentioned 17 times so far in this thread. For those of you who may be in the same boat as me, and have no freakin' idea what the hell DAB is, may I present the following.
DAB - "Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) is a digital radio standard for broadcasting digital audio radio services in many countries around the world, defined, supported, marketed and promoted by the World DAB organisation. The standard is dominant in Europe and is also used in Australia, and in parts of Africa and Asia; as of 2022, 55 countries are actively running DAB broadcasts.
DAB was the result of a European research project and first publicly rolled out in 1995, with consumer-grade DAB receivers appearing at the start of this millennium. Initially it was expected in many countries that existing FM services would switch over to DAB, although the take up of DAB has been much slower than expected. As of 2023, Norway is the first country to have implemented a national FM radio switch-off, with others to follow in the next years. In recent years, DAB has become the most popular radio listening platform in Norway, Switzerland and the UK, and has become a requirement for all new cars sold in the EU since 2021." More at the above link.
No wonder I had no idea what DAB was/is.[This message has been edited by Patrick (edited 08-18-2024).]

You know how it works on AliExpress... The base unit is $75. If you want the "special edition" with fan, you pay $20 extra for a $1 fan... 😄 Same with the GPS antenna. If you order one with GPS antenna, you pay about $20 extra, and you get a GPS antenna that costs about $3.
I have too many 12V fans laying aroud. So I'm glad I found some use for them. 😁

I refuse. I absolutely loathe their business model.
We have four vehicles that are XM ready. In about a week, after my Jeep's free trial runs out, none of them will be active.

Finally had some time to install the head unit.

Without the faceplate:

It does fit the stock center console trim, but it sticks out a bit. You’d need to enlarge the opening by about 1/25th of an inch to make it sit properly. I actually made my own custom center console trim with interchangeable faceplates, so now I can control exactly how much it sticks out - if at all. I went with a nearly flush look.
I haven’t hooked up the GPS or DAB+ antennas yet - that’s next on the list. But since it already supports CarPlay and Android Auto, it does pretty much everything I need for now. Next steps: connect the antennas and, while I’m at it, install a reverse camera.

Steve, I bought an Alpine car stereo of which XM was inbedded in the head unit. I love it. I use Sirius. They offer a low introductory price. Mine was $5.80 a month. Then they wanted more after the introductory price and I told them I was not willing to pay it. It has been $5.80 a month for ?10 years. There abouts.
I love it because I can listen to music, news, podcasts, and more. I travel a lot and lose regular radio station signals as I transverse between station signal areas. Which means I always have to find a new station I like enough to listen to.
XM is like GPS reliability. I can listen to what I want as long as i care to. Even if I drove to Florida, or elsewhere, from Texas. I have never had the chance to see what it would do in the Netherlands.

What mount are you using to get it as close to flush as possible?
I have a cheap one of these so I can have carplay. I just cut some sheet metal to make it work, but eventually want something more solid.
Thanks
