Traded these Vision 164's to a guy in ARK for a set of OEM gold lace wheels.

I am looking into a new set of wheels. I would show off my current wheel / tire combo, but I cant get pip to work right...?
I have a question about the possible new set of wheels: the wheel is 17" x 7" with 5.625" or 42 mm offset backspacing. Is that backspacing ok for our Fieros?
What size tires should I be looking for? I was thinking probably 225/45/17? Is that too tall or not tall enough?

Is there a rule of thumb for rim size, tire width and the required offset needed for front and back that avoids fender rub? If my goal is to fill the wheel well with a bit of tire stickout, what's the best match up? I've seen cars with 17s in front and 18s in back....I've seen 19s all around. I think I'd prefer to go 17 or 18 combo to maximize the rubber w/out looking too thin or having the ride too rough.
So if I went 17x8s on front with say...225/45 in front and a 18x8 in back with 255/40s....what offset would be ideal? Have folks experimented with adapters? Finding rim setups in the 5x100 configuration is tough! But I've heard alot of good and bad with adapters.
Thanks for the help!! Pictures are helpful, but I'm wondering if theres a formula to stick to in determining proper fit. I'd be looking to do this for an 87'.

There is no formula for buying ready made wheels. Tire and wheel fitment is almost an art. The problem as you know there are not a lot of selections for 5 x 100 and even less when you have different sizes front and rear.
Unless you go custom wheels, it's nearly impossible to find the perfect fitment.
Let me give you a little help though
http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp
Start with trying to keep the overall diameter the same as stock.
Although I will tell you that a Fiero won't look right unless you go one size bigger in the rear. This will change your gearing so not recommended for drag racing, but it looks better.
Offset, on an 88 in the front, the more the better. Not such a concern in the rear. I don't know about 84-87. Most offsets are between 35 and 40 mm. Probably won't run into any issues unless you stray a lot from that.
Anything over 27 inches in diamter and you will have issues, so try to stay below that. Other than that run any choices you have by Madcurl, he can do these calculations in his head. [This message has been edited by jscott1 (edited 09-26-2006).]
