It wasn't the impeller that was loose. The whole shaft could be wiggled around. The impeller was still solidly attached. There was about 1/4 inch side to side movement of the pulley. The bushing or bearing must have just disintegrated.

Footnote: We never managed to get the old pump off. Torx head bolts and two of them at the bottom stripped.
I've ordered Rodney's replacement hex bolts for whoever works on it next. Only way I can see to fix it is to lower the back of the cradle for clearance and grind off the heads of the two bolts. Then remove the old pump over the studs and use vice grips to remove them. The lack of clearance to get a straight shot at them aided in them stripping out.
